So, please educate me... Is the GoPro 5's inability to work directly with an external microphone withou an adapter due to a hardware or a software issue? If it's hardware, I understand why it can't be solved. But if it's software...

Today I went out and I left my sound on Protune's Medium. and at reset of protunes. so hopefully my shots were not ruined , if I only wanted better sound. I also left wit hAuto sound only and More or less the Washing machine affect is NOTICABLE and annoying for me. I am using the only allowed PROMIC 3.5mm adapter by Gopro (money maker) and a Rode video Micro, that picked up ANYTHING in the front like you can not imagine, Oh wait its a shot gun mic for 3 feet away no, not that true Lol.
Awesomne Job Rode get your act together GoPro. asking people for continued samples is a delay of a fix.
My complaint on my own side ofthings is I should have strapped down the rode cable. you can here it tap, and also youcan here the Hardware of gopro STILL pick up your turning or sliding of hte camera. NOT GOOD gopro. It is A Gain control of Hardware, moret hen Microphone chip if asked ?????

Hi Fishy...I follow you on YouTube and this site and I thank you for all your imput. I have the Hero 5 Black and the voice command worked when I first got the camera and then quit working. I don't know if this is a common problem or not. It would be nice to have the voice command for my use.

Wish I could help, but have no recommendatoins.
Recently bought a Hero 5 Black specifically for a late-summer cruise. Also bought the external mic adapter, GoPro suction cup mount, dual batteries and charger, Karma gimbal/grip, and some 3rd party attachment accessories. So far, haven't been able to get the adapter to work with any microphone, though I don't own one of the Saramonic mics mentioned in an earlier post.
I haven't seen anything hinting/indicating old firmware would allow the adapter to work, but at this point the cruise is over and I lost a lot of narrative audio because none of my external mics worked. Very disapointed in GoPro.
I bought the adapter and it doesn't work with any of my mics, and there is no mention on the GoPro site of what mic(s) will work. When I clicked on a link for a list of recommended mics, I got a 404/page not found error.
Having paid nearly $ 1 K for the Hero 5 and accessories, and to have one of those very desirable accessories end up being something that doesn't work, and not having access to recommended mics, is extremely disappointing.
I'm feeling like the entire idea of using external audio on the Hero 5 is a scam.
At this point, I'd recommend that others products be considered first.

This is like a Pet rock not one camera or gopro product works a like.
I did not have to update firmware at the start to get any mic to work or the promic itself. If i get the time I can pop on and simply show whatever mics I got, or whoever wants to send me one, I will get to work.
I am not debating or arguing I agree I ran into - oh no watch out a tr... will argue my point how I bought this other camera a 360 it over heats, others do not So yeah I get lemons to sometimes.
I'll report in but i nthe mean time share me a photo of the mic you are using. and we'll see what we can come up with to get you going. no promises it wil lwork but lets see.
