I am looking for a lapel microphone that is compatible with the Hero 5 Black camera. I have purchased 3 and only 1 works. The only one that has worked so far is the Sony clip. However, this microphone is silver and stands out like a sore thumb. I am looking for something small which can be easily hidden.

The microphones I have gotten have all been relatively cheap. All are TRRS but I have also gotten therefore, stereo. But I have gotten a mono handheld microphone to work. It just seems like there should be some sort of standard that you should match and if your microphone is that standard, it should work. So far it seems like hit or miss and mostly miss. Perhaps the ones I purchased were DOA but it seems hard to believe that 2 of the 3 would be faulty.

If the Promic can auto detect we all would not have these problems and it may make for an esier use of the promic. If I am to use a Mono mic I must get mono femal to stereo mal adapter. and if I wanted to use a TRRS I must get a TRRS to TRS adapter.
It can be possible that you did not push the mic firmly in and not seated, the promic defective, or like said not the righttrs. smartphone mics do not owrk unless adapters are used all the pins missalign, we understand that . just why I asked at the start for a photo.
hope that helps one out some you're using what TRRS?

I really appreciate your help and your quick response. I don't have my mics with me but one that is not working is a Zaffiro (bought it on Amazon). It said it was GoPro compatible but now I see a post that says its not compatible with GoPro 5 (only GoPro 3 & 4.. The Zaffiro is a TRRS but came with a TRRS to TRS adapter. I tried it with the adapter and without it. Didn't work either way. I had heard many people comment in various places that various mics did not appear to work because they weren't pushed in all the way. So I double checked that with each test. It's interesting because the extension cable that the Zaffiro came with works with my Sony but not with the Zaffiro. The extension cable is a TRRS.
The other one that doesn't work is a Yelloway. I believe it is a TRRS. I bought this one on Amazon as well.
After all these tests I decided there is no sure fire way to know if a mic will work before purchasing it. That's when I got on this forum to find out if I was missing something.

totally understand we do not carry our products with us.
Do not use quik capture turn camera on then hit record. try plugging in the promic after the camera is ON and the nthe mic and then hit record. iAlso make Sure the T R S is in the promic then the T R R S to the adapter. if it gets no sound then plug in the mic first.
if it fails give me the mic and i bet I can get it to work in a heart beatt (JK) could be not you and I agree with what's happeningg keep the site posted

Thanks so much. I'll give that a shot and get back to you with the results. It may be a few days though, I'm off traveling for the next couple of days.
BTW... you keep refering to the promic. What is that? Is that the adapter I bought from GoPro that goes from the 3.5mm to the USB-C.
