I don't understand why gopro don't just fix this issue. It's in their own interests to keep their customers happy.
There is absolutely no reason why there should be a "lengthy wait" for this to be resolved with a firmware update. That just basically says they can't be bothered to fix it.
Decisions like that, and the decision to block the use of 3rd party batteries are not the way to recover their failing company.

I have no idea how the product testing looks like in GoPro, but i checked most of first reviews of H5 that went online. None of the blogger-testers added anything groundbeaking from themselves besides talking bit more about what was mostly known from GoPro website. Noone used it as a tool for specific tasks, and noone gave feedback of real life usability besides what was already known. There was not even one semi-proffessional test focused on photography (i've found one, but too many important things were ommited).
Maybe they just don't send any gear to the testers for testing in different real life situations, but just to bloggers for marketing purposes only.
Looks like it to me.. so now the community has to report bugs and submit ideas. And devs will implement only what they are told to by the executives. Their time costs, and they have alot of work to do. And You know - maybe it's only irrelevant fraction of users that need it to work under specific conditions. If large majority is very happy with the product (it works good, takes great selfies and family videos), than maybe they don't need to spend extra time and money to please a couple of guys that need more ;)
That's only my guess.
Only thing we can do is to report bugs and submit ideas, hoping that they will land on the desk of someone that can make decisions.

I did a shoot this past week and RAW format and editing make some really great quality pictures but the screen on I lost nearly 50+ percent in 25 minutes in around 35 degree weather. I have a polar pro h2o power grip but I wanted see how bad the battery life was so I just used it as a 3way. My 2cents is they need drop the price on the battery since it's only compatible with the Hero 5 Black and if yall have multiple cameras why should battery that works in only one and last maybe an hour ish be same price as the older batteries that fit multiple cameras.

Of course the devs are only following instructions - how is that relevant though? They should be instructed to update the firnware. The issue has been brought to the attention of the company and they have clearly chosen to ignore it.
It's ridiculous that having bought the brand new top of the range model, if i want to go out and take photos for any length of time I'm forced to revert back to the previous model - just because of a software change that has removed functionality. It's a shame because other than this issue I love the H5.
As for the 3rd party battery thing - to spring that on people unannounced and instantly disable gear that people have already invested in is absolutely disgusting behaviour, and something you'd expect from apple rather than gopro.
I read about the founder of the company - seems like his he can no longer relate to his customers. Rushing out new models with glaring omissions in functionality, then refusing to address the issues, and instead choosing to spend the effort disabling customers' accessories without warning? Sounds like gopro has had its day and the share price seems to reflect that.

Just some observations.
You sure you guys are not mixing up the the quck capture exposure lock bug that I understand will take some time to fix?
The screen off I think is been looked into righ now so I've heard.
GoPro are offering a lot of features in the 5, (an of course should all work) but it is still primararly an action cam. Stick it on you helmet and go.. Nature, shooting, astro, RAW etc can be done with the added features, but I'm sure the testers are not out doing timelapse bird watching or astro, but flyng down the mountain in a wingsuit, snowboard, mountain bike etc.
Agree that they should have informed in the update that AM batteries would stop working.
My 5 works well, no battery drain when off, records video in all modes, doesn't get hot, no lock up, (had major prob with the 3+ until I ditched the sandisk card) the rear screen is a lifesaver for quick mode changes apart from the 1 min turn off Don't notice any screen bleed, but there again I use the the sreen for what it is, not sitting in a dark room looking for bleed...
I'm sure GoPro read these forums, but send in constructive suggestions.
There are a ton of things I hope GoPro fix, especially gps logging and overlay software, but its coming, as for now, go out and use it... Its a **bleep** good cam.

I appreciate what you're saying about it being an action cam, but even as an action cam you still need to be able to start and stop recording whenever you want without thinking "i better just leave it running because if i keep stopping and starting it the screen will keep coming on and run the battery down." This for me is an absolutely fundamental issue.
Interestingly, the screen does not come back on when a shot is taken using timelapse (contrary to some reports).

jack880, I deff agrre that the screen should be alble to set to off to save battery.
Just for info, I got 1hour43mins and had 6% left. 1080/30, gps on, voice controll on and use the screen 20 times=20 minutes screen time. No bad by any means.
Will have to test4K or high frame rates etc.
