GoPro Fusion, iOS and iPad Pro and Overcapture - some experience?

I am considering buying a Fusion cam - and although I fully understand the demands on the computer side, that's (probably) not going to be an issue; however what I would like to understand and seem unable to find out, is the interaction of the Fusion with iOS / iphone & ipad.

I have been using an H5 and iOS for quite some time - in fact nearly abandoned teh computer completely; however, although the GoPro app has become pretty good, the transfer speeds via WiFi are unacceptable with the H5 already, even not shooting at very high qualities - to the point that I abandoned the GoPro App completely and rely on my Apple SD card reader to import into camera roll (unfortunately at USB2 speeds only). I assume this may have gotten a bit better with the H6 that support 5GHz Wifi...

I have failed to find a solution that would enable fast USB3 transfer speeds straight from the H5 to the iPad (I thought the Apple USB 3.0 adaptor may get this done, but it does not work with the H5 (?!).

Now coming to the Fusion - I would like to use the Overcapture feature on iOS - but how am I getting the presumably large files from two SD cards onto the iOS device - I mean in practice, what works really?

The promo videos suggest, WiFi should work (but my experience on the H5 as been poor). Assuming there's no way to attach the Fusion with a cable, is it possible to sequentially read out the two SD cards e.g. using the Quick Key?

Does anyone have any practical experience that she/he could share? Also using the Overcapture editing on iOS, does it work as advertised?

Thanks heaps

Re: GoPro Fusion, iOS and iPad Pro and Overcapture - some experience?

Hello @rockybluff5072

Very good questions. First, we have a list of specific devices that are Fusion Supported. You can check the complete list here. This is not updated though to include later models, so we stick to the list in the meantime until it is documented that later/newer models for mobile devices work compatibly with Fusion through the GoPro App.

In addition, Fusion files are not saved on an iOS device's camera roll, only on the local folder within GoPro App. This then entails using a computer with GoPro Studio if you would want to save Fusion media on your phone's gallery.

Based on personal experience, the HERO6 Black camera allows for a faster transfer rate of media through the GoPro App. The dual bands for download, and the new GP1 chipset make this possible.

Here are other details that you might find helpful in your decision-making process:

Feel free to post back for any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Marius

Re: GoPro Fusion, iOS and iPad Pro and Overcapture - some experience?

@mariustanya thnaks again for this - that is helpful; Only I still don't know how fast / easy it would be to transfer a video from the Fusion into the GoPro App - do you have any idea how long e.g. a 1min clip may take to move over to iOS?

I understand, there are export limits (basically making temporary off-loading raw files onto an iOS app impossible, when for example travelling), but I can export the overcapture -> traditional videos just like normal videos into the camera roll or into Quick (or even dropbox), correct?

Is there a time limit for the traditional videos derived from a 360 video? or stitching time the limit? any idea how long e.g. a 1min clip would take to stich on an iPad Pro? (is it feasible at all?)

I think I read somewhere, that the iOS stitching is lower quality than the Fusion Studio (PC version) one, is that correct?

thanks again,

Re: GoPro Fusion, iOS and iPad Pro and Overcapture - some experience?

Hello @rockybluff5072

Sorry, we currently do not have the information that you are looking for, that is, even an approximate time needed to import a file from the camera to the phone. We only have information for Fusion Studio, such that when using the app, stitching (and being able to see a preview in GoPro Fusion Studio) should take just a few seconds to a minute. This should, relatively be the same as in the GoPro App.

We do not have access to outputs from stitching in iOs so we are not able to compare the quality with stitching done through Fusion Studio.

Thanks,
Marius
