GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

Hello,

I have recently started to face a problem on my GoPro 7 Black, recording @2.7K, 60frames using SanDisk Extreme 64GB Class 3 card, that after I stop recording via pressing top button, the video recording stops and my GoPro is supposed to switch off subsequently too. Sometimes when recording for minutes it works like this without any issue while other times I record couple of seconds and after pressing record button it just stops recording but it takes the camera even 1 minute or more to switch off.

Any ideas? Any known bug?

This means that the camera is not usable until it goes off completely as during switching off is not possible to operate it.

thanks

lukas

Re: GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

Hello @lukasg331. The camera working inconsistently is not an expected behavior. We would like to determine what the issue is by isolating possible sources of trouble. Is the camera updated to the latest firmware? You mentioned you are using a Class 3 card but the GoPro requires at least a Class 10 to work smoothly. There is a list of recommended cards here

If you have not done it yet, re-flash camera firmware following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Update page and choose your HERO7 camera.
  2. Under "Other ways to update" at the base of the page, click "Update your camera manually."
  3. Enter your Serial Number and other requested information, click Next Step.
  4. Click "Download Update."
  5. Click "Click here to download firmware."
  6. Follow the steps on the screen for detailed instructions for your operating system.

Make sure that the camera is fully charged and that the recommended SD card is formatted prior to the update. Do not forget to save your files first before formatting the card. Let us know how it goes after you test the camera again. We hope to hear back from you. Thanks!

Re: GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

hi marius,
many thanks for your prompt reply.
Actually according to GoPro Quik I am at the latest firmware.
Regarding the card, I might be wrong when the class is concerned in my previous statement. Here's the one I use (apologies for the quality, taken in dim light condition with cell-phone):Screen Shot 2019-07-29 at 10.42.56 PM.png

Re: GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

It's a UHS 3 card that you have so this is good, @lukasg331. Have you already tried fully formatting the card? Still proceed with the manual update even if the camera has the latest firmware. Doing it will clear out any possible issue with the current installation. Let us know how it works out. Thanks!

Re: GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

Hi there,

I always format the card after downloading the videos in order to avoid any card malfunction.

I have proceeded as you suggested with manual firmware update and I am now in the testing phase.

Just one additional question here. Initially when I powered my GoPro via Powerbank (when recording my longer biking trail) the issue with GoPro not switching off for minutes was present while recently it started to happen when using just internal GoPro battery. I suppose that GoPro should work without any problem including switching off once recording is finished even when plugged to Powerbank, correct?

Thank you

lukas

Re: GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

Hi @lukasg331

It should not make a difference if using a powerbank or the battery.

However, for longer recordings, most users suggest taking the battery out and letting the camera run off the external power source.

Thanks!
Ej

Re: GoPro 7 black does not want to switch off after recording

Thank you Ej and Marius,

I have gone for manual firmware upgrade this morning as mentioned and since then tested many different scenarios. Firstly with internal battery only, then also with Powerbank. I have recorded roughly 20 videos today, some short, some very long ones so the camera itself created separate 4GB videos and all the time when I stopped recording the camera switched off automatically right after.

So, so far so good.

Will give it couple of more tries but I am getting very positive.

To sum it up, as Marius suggested, even though my GoPro Hero 7 Black was on the latest firmware, after manual update to the same version it seems that my reported problem is gone.

cheers

lukas
