GoPro 5 "SD card error", heating up and not charging

Hi guys!

I bought my GoPro last July 2017 to use in my water adventures. It was also the first 3 days that I used it underwater, max depth about 3 meters, and it worked fine. I then used it last August 2017 when we went to Taiwan for vacation, there I started having this problem wherein it will stop recording in the middle of my video and there was an "SD card error". I just restarted my device which solved the problem. I was still able to transfer my videos but all this time I was having the same error return.

The last time I used my device was September 01, 2017 for another water adventure. On the road, it was working fine and then I got my first few shots underwater recorded. No "SD Card error" this time. However, when I was about to return to the water, my device turned off. I tried to turn it on, it just displayed on the screen the "temperature" symbol but it was not turning on. I let it rest, thinking that is was a temperature problem but my GoPro did not feel hot to touch. After an hour of resting, I returned to my GoPro and this time it was really hot but it was turned off. I immediately removed the battery and all.

When I went home, I searched the support hub and saw that many users were having the same problem. I tried the buttons technique, even the manual SD card update but I had no breakthrough. I tried charging it but nothing. It just heats up but the LED light does not turn on.

Can someone please help me fix this problem?

My SD is a lexar 16gb card. I am using an original cable. I was still able to transfer my shots for that day to my computer.

Re: GoPro 5 "SD card error", heating up and not charging

Sorry to hear you're having issues. It sounds like one of two things, or possibly both.

The initial SD card error is most likely related to your SD card and/or not being on the most recent update.

What type of Lexar are you using, 1000X or 633X? The 1000X will work good for all resolutions including 4K while the 633X will be trouble free for 2.7K and lower (it will work for 4K but not as reliably).

The heating and inability to get the camera to function sounds like there may have been water that got into the camera. You did the right thing by removing the battery. Did you notice any water under the seal of either the battery or SD media port door?

Follow these steps
1) Make sure you are using one of these cards https://gopro.com/help/articles/Block/microSD-Card-Considerations
2) Format your card in your computer
3) https://gopro.com/help/articles/Solutions_Troubleshooting/HERO5-Black-Will-Not-Power-On
4)https://gopro.com/help/articles/How_To/Formatting-an-SD-Card-With-HERO5-Black

If it still wont work, you're going to need to contact the Support Team

Unfortunately, while the camera is waterproof, even a slight amount of lint or a grain of sand can compromise the seal. It's also possible one of the doors was not shut properly. If this is the case, you may not qualify for the warranty replacement. If it is due to manufacture defect you should be able to get a replacement.

Re: GoPro 5 "SD card error", heating up and not charging

Thank you, Daniel!
Mine is only 300x. Well probably that could have been the reason for the first error.
As for the water issue, I always double check the ports. I did not open the gopro until the issue came up. When I look inside, there was no water. Only at the brim which was the same thing when I first use the gopro last July, and it did not give me any problems back then.
Hopefully some of the solutions here will work. I really got frustrated because I was having a great time recording with my gopro.

I completly understand. It's heartbreaking when you miss out on capturing moments.

BTW, when you were in Taiwan, did you get any shots at Taroko National Park? I went there years ago and got some amazing pictures. We also did some hang gliding on the south end of the island. I wish I had my GoPro back then but it was early 2000. Cameras have certainly come a long way since then.

Re: GoPro 5 "SD card error", heating up and not charging

Yeah I did! I was so glad to have my camera with me that day. I was supposed to create a quik video this weekend but this gopro issue is really a bummer. I am not in the mood at all. I have to wait for the weekday to contact customer support and I heard that is hard to get through. Btw, tried the options you gave me and nothing has worked yet. I guess I'll try my luck again tomorrow and let the camera rest for whatever it's worth.

Re: GoPro 5 "SD card error", heating up and not charging

Good luck to you. Post that video here when you finally get around to it. Early morning during the week when they first open is generally the best time. I've tested it out a few times and usually get on the chat between 12 and 15 minutes. Late morning and mid-day and the wait has been upwards of an hour+. I've only tested it a few times because I didn't want to be taking up resources.
