Re: Go pro hero 3+ won't update!!!

[ New ]

Finally, got my my camera to update.  Several messages had said to unzip files in UPDATE.zip folder & then to place the new UPDATE folder with the 4 files onto my camera's micro SD card.  The camera would not update - I finally deleted folder & started over.

Update worked after moving the 4 unzipped files to the camera's empty space on the micro SD card.  DO NOT MOVE THE UPDATE FOLDER.

Re: Go pro hero 3+ won't update!!!

After 5 hours of trying everything this is what actually works:

"Hey Hallo,

Today I have updated my Hero 3 Silver. But I there was a Problem with the naming of the Data. When I have unzipped the Update-Zip there was a file called "HD3.09-firmware.bin". I think it´s wrong. I don´t know if it was good what i have done, but I renamed the file to this "HD3.01-firmware.bin", like this tutorial:

https://gopro.com/help/articles/How_To/Software-Update-Instructions-for-HERO3-Cameras

And then it was working right.

Merry Christmas,

Re: Go pro hero 3+ won't update!!!

I'm on version 3.03, trying to update to 3.11. When I try to copy to the camera, I get a pop-up saying 'can not copy UPDATE'.

I've tried to update through the GoPro Studio, it doesn't even see my camera let alone know there's an update to be had.

I've tried to update through my Samsung smart phone but I can't get any firmware updated, nor can I set to download when one' available.

Seems my issues started since Quik was brought out...pain in the ass....

I can't believe how hard it is to update through GoPro....

The Gopro website instructions are WRONG!!!!!

after you go through the process and download the update just extract the zip file to an unzipped UPDATE folder.

Drag this folder onto the empty and formated micro sd card.

There should just be that folder not the files the camera is looking for the FOLDER called update.

Fastcave's link for software did the trick here too.  Thank you so much.  Even though my GoPro is Silver it's Serial Number resolves as the "white" model.  Download files for GoPro3 white copied to microusb both to the root of the drive and also again inside a folder called "UPDATE" not sure which way it updated in the end - the key here it seems is getting the right colour.  Picky :P

if you have a GoPro 3, not a 3+ copy the contents of the update folder to the sd card do not put the update folder in the sd card.  I just had this problem.

The instructions for the Hero 3+ state to copy the files from the UPDATE folder to your card. It did not work for me. I copied the UPDATE 'folder' to the card and my Hero 3+ updated.

I have been having the exact same issue for forever, bought by GoPro couple of years back but have never been able to use it properly. Customer support hasn't really been a help either so I guess I am never buying GoPro again!

Hi @Anonymous

I am really sorry if you feel this way. Please follow these instructions to manually update HERO3+ camera software:

  1. Reformat your microSD card in the camera with the Delete ALL/Format function in the settings menu.  If you're unsure of how to do that, read these instructions on how to reformat your microSD card in your camera. NOTE: Please ensure that you save any wanted footage on your SD card prior to formatting; this process will delete all videos/photos on the card.
  2. Power off your camera and eject the microSD card.  Set your microSD card aside.  In the steps outlined below, you'll need to drag a folder from your computer to your microSD card.  Find your 'microSD card to USB adapter' or your 'microSD to SD card adapter' and set it aside for later.
  3. Download the update, which will download the UPDATE folder to your computer.  Note - if the UPDATE folder is zipped once you download it to your computer, meaning that you see "UPDATE.zip" instead of "UPDATE", double-click on it so that UPDATE.zip unzips to give you the UPDATE folder.
  4. Connect your microSD card to your computer using the adapter you set aside in step 2, then drag the UPDATE folder to the root level of your microSD card.
  5. Eject your microSD card from your computer.
  6. Make sure your camera is powered OFF, then insert your microSD card back into your camera.
  7. Power your camera ON.  In a few seconds, the camera's screen will flash "UPDATING" with a picture of a down-arrow and a camera to indicate that it's updating.  It'll power OFF/ON 1-2 times, and show a message saying "UPDATE SUCCESS".
  8. Lastly, it is recommended to reformat your microSD card again in the camera so that you start with a fresh card the next time you use your camera.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Ej

Holy smokes, thank you so much fastcave4185!

I can't believe the GoPro how-to guide tells you to move the update FOLDER to the root of the SD-card when it's actually the FILES within that folder that are supposed to be moved to the root (I have the Hero 3 Black, NOT the + model)

Took me forever to figure it out but I persisted. With my GoPro 3 I had to put each item in the update folder directly onto the drive itself, meaning that keeping all the items in the folder was causing the GoPro to not update. After I moved each individual file onto it, it worked.

Re: Go pro hero 3+ won't update!!!

[ New ]

I had the same issues of the camera not recognizing the update once I down loaded it to the memory card. I finally figured it out!!!

The instructions from GOPRO  really dont make it super clear but this is what I did.

Do all of the instructions like GOPRO says  up till you get to the EXTRACT part. On your computer create a file called UPDATE and put the extracted files in that file called UPDATE . then down load the file UPDATE  , that you created, to you sd card. the GOPRO HERO 3+ and the GOPRO HERO 4 will not except the down load unless it sees a file called UPDATE. Hopefully this will help some of you . It took me 2 days to figure this out.

good luck

Thanks for the information. It's not really necessary to create a folder named UPDATE. I think there is confusion because when Windows extracts the UPDATE folder from the UPDATE.zip file it shows the contents, and not the folder.

You are probably correct. But if it was written clear enough there would not be 9 pages of people not understanding why their gopro wont update. I know for a fact that my way does work.

Man, I hope this helps you. I had the same problem and was getting extremely frustrated. What i did is Reformated the dicks on my computer. Then I added all the files from the update folder "out of the folder separate” than I added the update folder with all the files in it. Then I added the update.zip folder. So, that makes two folder and about four files all separate. And it started to update.

Look under the DEVICES section on the left of the Finder window. You will see your microSD card listed as 'NO NAME'. Drag the files inside the UPDATE folder to your microSD card labeled 'NO NAME'.

Do not copy or drag the UPDATE folder but only copy the contents inside.

If it's a Hero3+ you need to paste the UPDATE folder with the files inside. You do copy or drag the UPDATE folder onto the root of the card (easiest way is to just format the card first). On a Hero3 (not Plus) you copy the files within the Update folder.

Compared to the instructions here: https://gopro.com/support/hero3-plus-product-update/move-files you don't need to put the individual files on the SD card, but the folder called UPDATE.

I made a format of my SD card and placed the UPDATE folder (not the zip file) on the root of the SD card, and then the update process started on the camera.

I was extracting the files from the folder and moving them to the SD card and the updates failed. Moving the Update Folder itself solved the problem. The GoPro website instructions are a bit unclear on this. Thanks for clearing that up! Everything is A Okay now!

Thanks for posting this! I believe the issue is that the updated downloaded from the official process is not including the additonal files needed to do the update. When you walk through the steps identifying your camera and settings you want - those settings files are not in the actual download zip. I did this process multiple times and only two files were included in the UPDATE folder each time. Your files allowed what was essentaily a factory reset where I could gain access to the camera via wifi again and then update again to the latest version. GoPro HERO3+ silver.

I just went through about two hours of heck getting my Hero3+ Black to update.  I started redownloading and extracting the update file and noticed there were a different number of files.  I kept trying until one of the downloads finally did the upgrade.  I guess it finally extracted the correct number of files needed.  The card speed didn't matter on mine.  It's a class 4.

I FINALLY DID IT!

Make sure you drag and drop each file to the sd card. Dont just use the update file.

Extract the files drag and drop!

Be safe.

@diverdown62
If you updated by dragging the files and NOT the UPDATE folder, you have a HERO3 and NOT a HERO3+.

HERO3 = drag files inside UPDATE folder to SD card

HERO3+ = drag the UPDATE folder to SD card

Well I should tell GoPro they labeled my camera wrong!

It is clearly labeled on serial number and case H3S+.

what is important is the update worked mate!

Re: Go pro hero 3+ won't update!!!

Hi @reddive77075, you can try to follow these steps accordingly:

  1. From the HERO3+ update page click "Update your camera manually" below "Other Ways to Update" to begin.
  2. On the first page, enter your serial number and registration information and then click "Next Step."
  3. On the next page, select 'Wi-Fi & Firmware Update' with the blue check mark and click "Next Step."
  4. On the next page, enter your new camera name and password.
  5. Follow the steps from STEP 3 through the LAST STEP on this link:  Software Update Instructions for HERO3+ Cameras

If the camera does not initiate the update it can be because the camera is not recognizing the update on the SD card. You will want to make sure to follow all of the instructions as outlined on the GoPro website's update page to ensure no steps are being missed. I do also have some suggestions here that should help get the update working as well.

  • Make sure the UPDATE folder is unzipped/extracted, before placing it on the SD card. If the folder is compressed, the camera will not be able to read it;
  • Ensure the UPDATE folder does not have any additional characters in the folder title, i.e. "UPDATE (1)". The camera will only recognize a folder titled "UPDATE", in upper case letters with no additional characters;
  • Format the SD card before placing the update folder/files onto the root of the card (format on yourcomputer, or DELETE ALL files in the camera's Delete menu);
  • Be sure to place the entire UPDATE folder on the root level of the SD card.

Once you have the necessary file(s) placed on the SD card, unplug it from the computer and insert the microSD card into your camera. Once it's plugged in, power on the camera. The update should automatically initiate.

Hopefully this helps!

Ann

Re: Go pro hero 3+ won't update!!!

I know this is an old thread but I just had this problem and was able to get it fixed so I wanted to add a post for anyone else stumbling across this.

The two differences for me were:

1:

I formatted my SD card then put the files in a folder called "UPDATE".

2:

When I turned on the camera I held the power button down for 8-10 seconds.

This caused my camera to finally update.

Also, the SD card didn't seem to make a difference for me. The one I used in the end was an ancient 2GB card.
