My recently bought Hero 5 doesnt appear to capturing good resolution videos or pictures, the videos looks like low resolution and my cell phone can take better videos than this. 4k doesnt even give the quality of 1080 or 720. im using Sandisk Elite 95MB/s speed SD card, please suggest. have tried with all resolutions and FPS.

Turning on ProTune boosts the video bit-rate dramatically (even if you don't change any other settings).
And bit-rate playes a HUGE role in video quality.
So if you want the best video footage possible, you need to have ProTune turned ON. Updating firmware is always a good idea, but it is unlikely to have any effect on video resolution (firmware updates generally fix bugs, UX, or add more features... one of those bugs fixed may be issues with SD cards, which GoPro's are natorius for... that is the only way I can imagine video resolution improving with just a firmware update.)

I should also mention that you need to offload the footage to properly preview the quality of said footage.
When you preview the footage on your phone through the app, you are only previewing a very low-resolution version of your actual footage. This is intentional and for good reasons (streaming speeds). So be sure to compare actaul offloaded GoPro footage before judging quality.
I think you will find that the quality matches or exceeds that of your high-end phone.
Best of luck.

Not a DSLR. it's an Action camera, point and shoot, nothing more. Protune's is additional settings.
Pleasedo post a sample so we can better understand why you got a bad resolution or shot? were you at Sunrise/set? at that Lagoon on a cloudy day? are you off loading LRV files, have you played back to the tv via the camera? your smartphone is not a powerhouse retna killing machine its a 4 plus inch screen that is all.
here to help not pun ya....
