GoPro released a hero 6 black Sept/oct 2017. . tehy released their HEro 5 Sept/oct 2015, along with hte Hero 5 Session, they Released their Hero Session ??? and their Hero 4 Black Sept /Oct 2014.  So you see the trend?  they used to release each year prior that.

The Hero7 should be out in sept/oct. Howevere the recent rumors suggest that is model is hardware identical to the Hero6 and thus the only practical difference will be in the firmware and packaging...

Also, the HERO (2018) is hardware identical to the Hero5 and thus the Hero is only crippled by the built in firmware limitations!

So we can just alter our Hero6 firmware supposedly and have a Hero7? Seems like they might make it a bit harder this time!

I do think it qould be ridiculous and a blatent attempt to save money if they use the same form again.

The only differences will probably be 4k60fps woth stabilisation and maybe 8k 30fps and 1080p 480fps.

If that is the case, and the camera uses the same GP1 chip then I will feel sinificantly ripped off with my Hero6 never being built to it's potential.

There is an update here as Gopro has registered a new model number lately.

Looks like one of the upcomming GoPro cameras is designated SPTM1.

https://fccid.io/CNFSPTM1/Label/Label-and-label-location-3905305

Further rumors from https://www.goprawn.com/forum/others/10941-new-gopro-sptm1-cams

According to this FCC report GoPro is getting ready to release 2 cams.

The 1st one is dark grey colored SPTM1(Version S) capable of shooting in 4K30, 1440p60 and 960p90 video modes. This camera has GPS feature.

The other one is light grey SPTM1(Version W), it seems to be something like a 'lite' version with video recording up to 1440p60/p30, no GPS.

Attached is a picture of the possible new user interface.

Can we expect big performance updates this year?

Quite frankly I don't.

I suspect the GP1 chip will continue for the Hero7 as well. Or they will revert to a more advanced prosessor from i.e. Socionext which is not specficially tweaked for GoPro. Or Ambarella for that matter. They are still around in the Hero 2018 edition.

i wonder what the score is here, because neither of those specs even better a Hero 6. If these get released its 3 lower spec camera's this year, & no new flagship model

Yeah, there are conflicting rumours here. But none seem to better the the Hero6 performance wise. But certainly it will not be worse either. Perhaps better priced. At least I don't think we will see a 500 USD retail price anytime soon.

In any case a new model number with minimal upgrades will not invoke price protections towards the dealers.

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

it is worse than the Hero 6, Hero 6 does 4k@60 while this only does 4k30. I suspect its got to be a range of replacement Session's

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

Judging by all of these rumours so far it sounds like:

1 x Dark Grey 2018 Premium Session replacement

1 x Light Grey 2018 Lite Session replacement

1 x Hero 7 Black (Which evidence suggests will be the same form as Hero 6 Black and just have updated firmware)

No news of a Hero 7 Silver.

i'm sure the Session specs haven't improved over the last models either then. Sure the Hero 5 Session is 4k@30, & the Hero 4 Session is 1440 (can't remember the frame rate)

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

I really do feel like a significant upgrade is due to be honest. If the Hero7 Black is a small incremental upgrade then GoPro can count me out.

I was quite underwhelmed with the specs on the Hero6 Black, although the incredible stabilisation and dynamic range sold it to me really. Not being able to shoot 4k60fps with stabilisation is such a bummer to be honest, and I'm fairly certain the GP1 chip is capable of it, GoPro just haven't unlocked the feature because they want an easy upgrade later on for Hero7 Black IMO.

Speaking seriously, the Hero7 Black should (but probably won't) have 4k 120fps, 4k 60fps stabilised, 1080p 480fps, maybe even 720p 1000fps seeing as smart phones are completely capable of that!

A larger sensor would also be nice but if the form doesn't change then neither will the sensor or lens. Hero7 Black will essentially be Hero6 Plus. Or "what the Hero6 sould have been".

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

So basically it'll be another GoPro that's not really worth upgrading from the Hero 4 Black for then, despite all the people who've asked for years that GoPro make the sensor bigger so dynamic range is better and so low light performance is better GoPro just won't do it. They pretty much keep recycling the same cameras and everytime one comes out it's a only a little better than the last but more expensive. People may say the dynamic range and low light ability is good on the Hero 6 but having been a professional photographer for 18 years I can say it's rubbish. Low light is awful and very noisy and dynamic range has always been poor. Now Sony are pretty much beating GoPro hands down with their X3000 action cam which has much better low light, far less noise and better synamic range. I've had two Hero 3 cameras and three Hero 4 Black cameras but if GoPro don't release the Hero 7 to be much better in low light with far less noise and much better dynamic range i'm moving over to the Sony cams from now on.

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

People it's not all about specs ok it's about performance first and foremost, the Hero 4, 5 and 6 have poor dynamic range regardless of what amateurs say (i'm a professional photographer and have been for years), the low light performance is dreadful, in very low light you need to ramp up the ISO and then you get horrendous amounts of image noise, the image stabilisation is good but it's not sensor shift all it does is crop the image resulting in degraded image quality. I as well as many GoPro owners would gladly pay more money for a Hero camera that has a larger sensor yielding better low light capability and dynamic range as well as less noise. I don't if the Hero camera is bigger as a reult performance and overall image quality is far more important than size and cost. But GoPro never listen so every camera is only a little better than the last and yet more expensive. GoPro are more concerned about wowing you all with specs than giving you much better image quality and low light performance.

Me personally i'm moving over to Sony if the Hero 7 isn't much better and buying myself a Sony FDR-X3000 as it's a better camera and that's the end of it.

A professional photographer, using a GoPro 3 generations old. Moaning about Hero 6 problems when he hasn’t even got one. Also trying to use an “action” camera & complaining about its low light levels

Looks like there will be a GoPro Hero7 White.

Putting the clues together, maybe we can expect the lighter colours to be the higher models this year considering we already know there will be a light grey (moderate) and dark grey model (basic).

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

I've spoken to a lot of people who've had the Hero 6 so I know there's big problems and i've watched a lot of videos of both the Sony FDR-X300 and GoPro Hero 6 and know it's not as good as the Sony so what the hell is your problem? I only ever used my GoPro in the swimming pool on holiday but if it's not very good then i'm not gonna be buying another. If you don't like what I say about the Hero camera then that's YOUR problem stop crying about i like a little pathetic baby just because i'm being blunt and honest.

wow calm down. Yes the Hero 6 had some very serious problems with it was first launched, so much even i took it back & got a refund. It take several month before GoPro released the firmware to solve it, but now its spot on (so much even the Hero 5 feels almost unusable compared to it)

PS chinese wispers spread about solved problems is my mine gripe

Calm down? *rolls eyes* Obviously you're one of these idiots who thinks anyone who disagrees with you and speaks bluntly must be angry, naive boy, lol. As for being solved as afar as i'm aware the poor dynamic range and horrendous noise in very dark scenes is still present and the only way to sort those problems out is for GoPro to use a bigger sensor which according to first reports GoPro once again aren't going to do with the Hero 7 when it's released. Sony are winning the action cam war I know a few people who'ved moved over to the Sony FDR-X3000 and couldn't be happier and say it's way better than any GoPro Hero camera there's ever been, two of them had Hero 6 cameras and got refunds and bought the FDR-X3000.

Would be lovely to know why my comments keep getting taken down?

All I've said now for the third time is that the Hero 7 will be white according to the rumours.

Actually I just found out everything is NOT fixed with the Hero 6 it's still occasionally crashing and you have to take the case off, take the battery out then put it back in and turn on the camera again, GoPro really need to fix that, that's something which happened a lot with my Hero 3+ Black and my Hero 4 Black and a few people I spoke to today also have said it happens to their Hero 6 as well regardless of having the latest firmware.

Have you guys seen the latest DJI Mavic II rumors?

It might feature a detachable camera/stabilizer unit which you can use as a separate action cam from the drone just like the GoPro Karma stabilizer system. Camera and stabilizer will sell for 250 USD!

Re: Go Pro Hero 7

I've just purchased the Hero 7 black.

How do I edit 4k 60fps footage in fcpx on my MacBook Pro mid 2012? I upgraded my ram and put in an SSD a while back which was fine for my previous hero 4.

I've tried converting with Handbrake but it doesn't convert most of time. After about 1% it usually bombs out. But sometimes it continues??

Why is this? Are my settings ok?

Hello @stoutgorge7826

There are detailed instructions here on converting HEVC videos to H.264 that you can use as reference. I hope this helps.

Thanks,
