GP Hero4/5 Session 58mm filter adapters?

Adding a 58mm filter adapter seems like a good idea to me for several reasons:

  1. Whether I have a filter on or not, it would help protect the lens!
  2. I have plenty of old 35mm SLR filters I could use!
  3. Gives me the added security of a lens cap!
  4. Easy to change out a filters!
  5. Plenty of filter options, polarized, macro, colored, etc.

Many I see online appear to be plastic and use a set screw, which may be a concern.

Aluminum adapter seems the "smarter" option, do you know of any such adapters?

Does anyone here use one?

What are your thoughts and/or product suggestions?

Thanks in advance!  Smiley Happy

Hi all,

I 3D printed a 58mm filter adaptor i will complete one for my session when the need takes me but its a very simple process,

It fits nice and snug around the front lens, the filter is just a push fit but again its nice n snug.

Re: GP Hero4/5 Session 58mm filter adapters?

Good idea.  It would be nice to have something of high quality made by GoPro.  There are options on amazon but I could only find the adaptors made of plastic. I have no idea the quality or durability.

I've just started using filters with my Hero4 Silver and have ordered some for my Hero5 Black.  It's really fun creating new shots I didn't know where possible.  I think GoPro should at least include a polarizing filter to their current line of filters.

My Hero5 Session is used more for surfing and as a camera I just throw in a bag to have handy, so I don't really have a need for filters for it.  I'm sure there are plenty of people who would though, given the chance.

As far as the front screen protector.  It's easily replaced and doesn't cost much so I wouldn't worry too much about it getting scratched.  You can get little square protective caps on amazon if you want the added security.They range from a couple dollars to $6 or $7.  I would recommend getting the cheapest one as they are all pretty much the same.  I have one and it works but I often don't use it as once I take it off there isn't a convenient place to put it except back in the bag where I usually forget it.

@danielr15

YES... a polarized filter is a must IMO!  So useful for all recording outdoors...especially water.  You can see into water much better with polarized filter on!

Didnt your cap come with a lanyard or lanyard hole?  If not, I'd add one!

I understand that the lens isnt expensive, but I'd rather not deal with the damage / replace / repeat cycle!  LOL!

Surely some users here use a 58mm filter adapter on their sessions?

@epicallyepic

That's cool!  How tough is the 3D printed stuff?

Please let me know when you have a version designed and finished for the session.  I might want to buy one from you!

Re: GP Hero4/5 Session 58mm filter adapters?

The 3d prints are actually very tough, I just use pla but if you go for abs then it's very tough.

The trick is how much infill you use, on these I would go at least 50%. If you wanted to break it you could but in normal use it's really solid.

i will maybe design one this coming week and let you know how it goes. What is critical is the radius of the outside from the filter as it needs to fit nice. I use a vernier and heliopan filters.
