GP 7 black is draining when it is switched Off

[ New ]

I’ve noticed that when the GP 7 black is switched off the battery drains in a few hours overnight.

  • connectios (GPS, Wifi) is tuned off,
  • speech control is tuned off,
  • quick capture is tuned off.
  • Camera is updated (1.61 firmware was updated manually via microSD card - Samsung EVO Plus).

Battery is made in Vietnam (Samsung).

Test of Battery integrity passed and times are according these specs https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/hero7-battery-information

I tested gopro many times and battery is stil draining when is turned off. Every hour at least 1% down.

Do you know what caused this issue? More people have same problem but without GOPRO statement.

GOPRO please give us normal statement what is causing this issue and mainly WHEN IT WILL BE FIXED.

@tomasm38460 - It's normal for the battery to lose some charge while in storage. If the battery is completely draining overnight though, it's something our Support team can troubleshoot with you. It could be an issue with the battery or possibly a short somewhere in the connection. Our Support team can be reached at https://gopro.com/help/ContactUs.

Thanks,

@jefft  Why camera needs energy if its completly turned off? I don't understand why the battery drops cca 1% down for every hour during its turned off.

It is obvious that gopro 7 black has a lot of battery issues (there is 49 pages thread "Hero 7 Black Battery Issues").

Everybody says:

  • yes  which can drain battery is off (gps, wifi, quick capture, voice control)
  • yes I am using micro SD card from your recomanded card list
  • yes I have last firmware 1.61
  • yes I did update manualy
  • yes I restarted camera to factory reset

and users still have NO answer WHEN you will fix this gradiously draining issue.

GOPRO please give us normal statement what is causing this issue and mainly WHEN IT WILL BE FIXED.

Well it happened twice in my case. All super features OFF like you......

My advice: If I want to be sure that camera is going to be off I turn ON beep on LOW level to not disturb - to be sure when is this moment. But I still do not know why after Led blinks and beep off sound, screeen of camera is still ON ~ 7 to 10 sec.

Maybe next update will fix it or maybe it is a mystery of programming ;)

Re: GP 7 black is draining when it is switched Off

@tomasm38460 - Many of the battery issues flagged on those other threads were resolved with our latest firmware. If you haven't updated your GoPro lately, please be sure to do that.

As for power drain when the GoPro is off, it's normal for there to be some natural drain from the battery itself. This is a low level of loss that you'd see if the battery is in the GoPro or not. Even environmental factors like keeping the battery in a cold room can drain some power. Finally, the camera itself can be using small amounts of power periodically. This power is used to keep the GoPro's internal clock operating, for example.

One other aspect to keep an eye on is that even if you have turned off the wifi connection on the camera, it's possible that the bluetooth connection is still active in the background. One way to be sure everything is off is to remove the battery from the camera, leave it out for 5 seconds or so, then pop it back in before storing the camera.

Dear @jefft did you read my posts? Ive mentioned that I have installed latest firmware 1.61 and also I turned off wifi.

You mentioned:"As for power drain when the GoPro is off, it's normal for there to be some natural drain from the battery itself. "
I cant belive that is real GoPros statement to this problem.Do you really mean that 10-15% drain per day in room temperature is "natural drain"?

I red lot of posts about GoPros battery issues and some guy measured temperature of camera when it was turned off - it had radicaly higher temperature compared to temperature if battery was removed.

My firmware comment was in response to the line in your post about the pages of issues with the battery. Most of those posts were made prior to the firmware update that was released to address those issues.

@jefftI still dont have solution for my problem.

Today battery had 96%. I turned off the camera. After 4 hours i turned on camera and there was displayed 0% capacity . I removed battery and turned on the camera again. Camera displayed 92% capacity.

Dear @jefft  how can I resolve this situation? Do you still consider this behaviour as normal?

@jefftyou have to remember that gopros customers arent beta testers! Please give us information how to resolve this problem.

AND my question again (which btw  wasnt still answered): GOPRO please give us normal statement what is causing this issue and mainly WHEN IT WILL BE FIXED.

Re: GP 7 black is draining when it is switched Off

Hello.

I am suffering EXACTLY the same issue.

Last fw, everything OFF (wireless, quik capture, voice control, GPS) and my new hero 7 drains 8-10 per night.

I tried to update manually, factory reset, sd formatting again but same result.

Sd is an approved one.

Actually yesterday I left it at 55% and 30 hours later was completely depleted! 0%

@tomasm38460Did you find any solution? Is this a Fw or Hw related problem?

I bought it in amazon so I have asked for a replacement. As soon as I received I'll test with its original Fw (1.5.1) instead of upgrading it just in case.

I have also contacted gopro support but they are asking about how many minutes does it record before it dies which in turn is normal (I get around 90 min of 1080/60).

Any idea?

I have the same problem in GoPro Hero 7 Silver (in addition, I can not remove the battery). I've only been using it for four days, the battery was with a charge when I bought it, but after the first charge in about eight hours she lost about 14 when it was off and with everything disconnected.

I have followed all the GoPro recommendations.

By the way. All my test were with 1.6.1 fw.

I have just noticed that there is a new 1.7.

I'll try it!

Any hint? Does it fix this issue?

@alexm56644  I tried everything ! But didnt find solution. I also contacted gopo support directly and they told me they give me replacement camera  (after battery test mine result was samething around 2 hours). But I had warranty in eshop (where I obught camera) so I puted it on claim and after 3 weeks they gave me new camera with new battery (made in china ..... My first battery was made in Vietnam).

This second camera has exactly the same issue like my first......All that things like turned off gps wifi voice controll quick capture etc. , formating sd card, updating new firmware manualy i have tried...

@jefft  what is wrong with GP hero 7 black cameras????

Wow. These are very bad news. I had some hope...

I'll try anyway.

By the way, what about older fw? Did the 1.5 FW had the same problem?

Same thing on my new Hero 7 black buddy, you're not alone trust me.

I am running latest 1.70 fw and all typical things are off or disabled like voice, WiFi, GPS, etc etc.

I also locked it to landscape modejust in case a gyro sensor was the culprit but it still drains far too fast for an isolated camera that is meant or designed to be turned 'off'.

Not very impressed with it so far I have to say.

I too am having this problem. Has anyone had their GoPro replaced? Is the battery drain still a problem with the replacement unit? I have read here in the forum about doing a manual forced firmware update even though I already did one wirelessly through the app. Has anyone done that and seen the battery drain issue go away? I just wonder if it’s a software or hardware problem. My thought is maybe software because sometimes I can leave the GP a week w/o usage and the battery is fine while other times it will drain a fresh battery overnight.

Re: GP 7 black is draining when it is switched Off

I have a some issue as you guys. GP7Black with firmware 1.70, microSD Samsung EVO Plus 128GB and when I charge battery in GP in one day to 100% then I am not able to switch it on day after as the battery is dead. When I charge it again on 100%, then put the batter out of the GP and then put it back after 2 days or so the battery is fully charged. So I think problem is the GP itself.

Also it does not matter if GPS and WiFi is turned on or off. Voice control is off also.

I don't charge the battery inside of the H7B. I bought the GP supercharger and when I put in a fresh battery, sometimes it's good for a few days of inactivity and sometimes it depletes overnight. BTW I have the SanDisk Extreme that is listed as compatible. I do hope for a fix. Otherwise love the camera.

Hi. Since I updated Hero 7 Black to latest 1.70 fw i have exactly same problem. Everything is turned off, but fully charged battery is empty over the night. I have 2 batteries, one from China, second from Vietnam. It does it on both of them. Both are less then month old. On FW 1.61 it was ok...

Hi @pitrscz,

Sorry to know that.

Have you tried checking if the Wireless Connection and wake up on voice command is on?

Turning off that function might help.

Same problem with my new GP7 black. (with latest 1.70 fw installed)

Drains aprox 10-15% per day (when camera turned off)

Also strange behavior on internal clock. It freeze when I turn off camera. The clock only goes when it turned on. Tested with different bataries and SD cards, same issue.

Steps to reproduse:

* To camera on and set current date/time

* Turn off camera fo 10 minutes

* Turn back, it shows time from first step

Best Regards

Really? Are you kidding me?! Do you read at least one post in this thread?! Its not a problem with battery life during using GoPro, but problem with battery life when GP is switched OFF!

I have 2 GP7 Blacks, on both I have older FW 1.61 and its OK, but when I tried FW 1.70 I had many problems (YES I HAVE ORIGINAL BATTERIES - 4pcs, YES I HAVE RECOMENDED CARD AND FORMATED IN CAMERA, YES ALL FUNCTIONS WAS TURNED OFF - VOICE, GPS ETC)
