Exact same problem as described by OP, and this solution to 'Troubleshoot' it worked!!
Sad that this is such an issue on what is suppose to be a high-end quality camera, and no fix for it.

Same problem...windows 10...but troubleshooting isn't helping at all.
Can't import because it says there's nothing to import but my SD (sandisk ultra class 10 64gb) is almost full...when I connect via USB it says it's empty
after 10 attempts I finally managed to enter the SD via windows but then at the same time i cannot import with go pro studio...and having my videos split into video with separate WAV is a pain on it's own...
Some videos are corrupt aswel...
What I'm forced to do at the moment is to transfer to my android phone via wifi...and the copy from my phone wihch is a very slow and frustrating method...and while the Xplayer app on my phone opens all the downloaded videos without any problem, once I copy them to my pc some of them are unusable
lost a few videos and more hours than I wished on my holiday just to transfer the footage...still a pain in the ass and still no viable soultion???

I’m having the same issue. I fought downloading the software on my laptop as well.
This is is my first gopro product and I’m very disappointed. Wish I would have never wasted the money on a hero 5.
