Glad to see you're not distracted driving at all....
I decided to try updating my app again to 5.1.1 (release Jan 2019), experienced the same issues with my Galaxy S7, still cannot download footage (photos/video) from my fusion. Had to role back to app 5.0 that was released in December. Worked straight away then with no issues. Thankfully GoPro was able to replicate the issue, so I'm not crazy and imagining things!

I actually did a bit of extensive testing with the GoPro Fusion and the App, I did a write up on it here:
So you may want to try downgrading your Fusion to Firmware 1.8 (if you're running the Beta 2.0) to see if that solves issues.
If not you can uninstall the app and then search online for the December GoPro APK file (there's a couple of sites out there) and install it. However please note, I think the black screen issue might be an Android 9.0 issue (which I believe only rolled out recently). So this may not help your issue at all.
