FYI Fusion Firmware vs App issue!

I have two GoPro Fusions and use them for filming about 90% of all my GoPro Footage these days.

I updated them both to the Beta 2.0 firmware when it was released.  Also when the January GoPro App update came out I downloaded that to my phone and ran into an issue.  I could not download video clips or photo's to my phone.  It would go through the process, but for video, it would show 1:33 remaining and then get kicked back out to the clip selection menu.  Same thing happened if I went to download a photo or a screen grab from the footage (this was using a Samsung Galaxy S7 and GoPro support were able to replicate the issue).  As a result I went back to the December release of the GoPro app and was able to download photo's and video's from my GoPro's with no issues (while running Fusion Firmware 2.0 beta).

Cut to today, I just updated to the most recent release of the GoPro app (March 15th release date) hoping that the issue may have been addressed.  However upon opening the app (love the layout by the way, very much improved) I was once again unable to download video's or photo's from the GoPro Fusion and was experiencing the exact same issue.

However I then decided to downgrade one of my Fusions to Firmware 1.8.  Once I did this, I was suddenly able to download footage again.

So strangely enough, it seems that App Version 5.0 and earlier (I also ran 4.6.1 I believe it was) will work with the Beta GoPro Firmware 2.0 on the Samsung Galaxy S7.  However the newer versions of the GoPro App (Jan 11th onwards) will only work with Firmware 1.8 on the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Re: FYI Fusion Firmware vs App issue!

Addendum:  Downgraded my other Fusion to Firmware 1.8 however I left footage recorded using Firmware 2.0 on the memory card.  Went to download it to the phone, same issue.  It would get halfway through downloading and then kick me back out to the selection (trim) screen.  Same with grabbing a photo.

I then recorded a brand new clip with the camera, selected the section I wanted it, and managed to successfully download it to the phone using the app.

So it looks like the app (January and March release) won't download any footage recorded with beta Firmware 2.0 to the Galaxy S7.

Older versions of the app (Pre January 2019) will download footage recorded using beta Firmware 2.0

Footage recorded using Firmware 1.8 will download to the Galaxy S7 using the March version of the app.

Re: FYI Fusion Firmware vs App issue!

One more addendum....  I own 2 x GoPro 6's, 2 x GoPro 4's and I was succesfully able to download footage from these cams to all versions of the App (4.6.1 to 5.2.1) on my Galaxy S7.  So this seems to be an issue only with the Fusion/Firmware/App compatibility.

Re: FYI Fusion Firmware vs App issue! (Further investigation)

So I was happy that I finally managed to get the GoPro app working with my Fusion again.  So yesterday I made a quick clip from my two Fusions (running Firmware version 1.8) using the GoPro app.  I managed to download footage from both cams.  I then used the app to format both camera's.  Saw that there was 5:01 free on both cameras (using a 128gb SD card) which meant the cards were clear as 5:01 is the max amount of footage I can usually fit on a card.

So I recorded video footage driving home yesterday and driving to work this morning.  Just an hour ago I decided to download the clips and once again, the footage was refusing to download.  It would get halfway through downloading before kicking me back out to the "select your clip" screen.

So I uninstalled and re-installed the app and that didn't work to solve the issue.

I then updated one of the Fusions (Fusion A) to Firmware 2.0 and tried to download the footage, and that didn't work.  I then downgraded Fusion A to firmware 1.8 and tried to download the footage again and suddenly it was working!

I then tried again to download footage from Fusion B, but it didn't work, gave the same issue as before.  So based on a hunch I went into the camera menu itself and formatted the SD card from the Camera menu.  I then recorded some new footage and tried to download it using the app and it worked!

So based on that, my immediate conclusion is this:

When using the app to delete footage from the camera, something is happening that is stopping footage from being downloaded via the app when you start recording again.  The way to fix this is to re-upload firmware 1.8 to your camera.

However, if you delete the footage from the camera directly without using the app, you won't have any issues downloading footage when you start recording again.

My next test is to upload firmware 2.0 to the camera, format the SD cards from the camera menu directly.  Record some new footage and then try to download via the app.

I really do hope that this info is being passed back to the tech team at GoPro and is proving useful.  BTW if this is a known issue and it's being worked on, please let me know so I can stop diagnosing a known issue!  Smiley Tongue

Re: FYI Fusion Firmware vs App issue! (Further investigation) Addendum

So just upgraded one of the camera's to Firmware 2.0 and then formatted the memory cards directly from the camera menu itself.  I was then able to record video and download it to my phone (Galaxy S7).

So in conclusion..............

Firmware 1.8 and 2.0 will work with the new version of the GoPro App (and the old versions too).  However, if you delete footage from your camera using the app, this affects the storage on the camera and you will be unable to download footage from your camera to your phone.  After uploading Firmware 2.0 to the camera, I was still unable to download previously recorded footage.  However after uploading Firmware 1.8 I was able to download previously recorded footage.

The other option is to format the memory cards in the camera itself after you delete footage and you shouldn't experience any issues.
