Re: External mic for HERO5 Black

Cool :) - im using gopro on my motorcycle helmet, so i cant be bothered with the brick. I need a caple, juuuuuuuust like we used to, which worked JUST fine. So annoyed with Gopro over this.

Looking into the new camera REVL :) has imagestabilization and turnable lens and what not. Looks cool!

Re: External mic for HERO5 Black

FInally, I've had some success with the GoPro Hero 5 Black External Microphone Adapter.

For others who might be looking for a combination that works (at least it works for me), the following is the first combination of pieces with which I've been able to get sound recorded to the Hero 5 Black while using its' external microphone adapter. I doubt it will suit everyone's needs since it still requires "the brick", but it's a start. I have a few other mics to try over the next few days, including a VideoMic ME, an iRig Mic, and others, but this is the first to produce results:

1 - Microphone Jack Adapter 3,5mm Female TRRS to 3,5mm Male TRS 4PIN To 3PIN iPhone Lapel Microphone To PC (purchased from a well-known online merchant site), and

1 - Miracle Sound Deluxe Lavalier Lapel Clip-on Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone for Apple Iphone, Ipad, Ipod Touch, Samsung Android and Windows Smartphones (purchased from the same well-known online marketing site).

I've also purchased the Rode SC3 TRRS-to-TRS short adapter cable, but haven't tested that yet.

As for the Audio setting on the Hero 5, mine was set at "Standard Mic". I'll try other settings in the near future, but for now, I'm glad to learn my GoPro External Mic Adapter may not have been a waste of money.

To GoPro documentation writers:

I'd suggest making the need of a TRRS-to-TRS adapter a bit more prominent in the documentation instead of as a footnote that is easily overlooked. If someone wants to use an external mic, it seems to be more of a necessity than an accessory.

It would also help to more prominently describe the impact/use of each of the various microphone choices under the "Audio" settings item. I have searched and have been unable to find any mention of those settings in the Hero 5 User Manual. I did find another helpful thread in the SUPPORT HUB, but no luck yet in official GoPro docs.

It seems the key part I was missing was the TRRS-to-TRS adapter plug. I'll know for sure after I test other mics, but at the moment, I'm hopeful.

Re: External mic for HERO5 Black

SOunds like  it is a user friendly problem

we must check the mics we buy an smartphone mic will not work in a camera mic  as see 4  pin configurations will set things off why it must be a 3 pin

Re: See this from GoPro about External mic for HERO5 Black

External Microphone Information with the Pro 3.5mm Mic Adaptor

  • HERO5 Session
  • HERO6 Black

What is the reserved power bias for external mics?
The reserved power bias for external mics on the HERO5 Black is 2.5V.

What's the impedance of the external mic?
  • GoPro mic input impedance is 2.2 kOhms in the STANDARD MIC and STANDARD MIC+ settings.
  • GoPro mic input impedance is 47kOhms in the POWERED MIC and POWERED MIC+ settings.
  • GoPro LINE IN input impedance is 8kOhms.

Unbalanced (3.5mm stereo)

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT QUICK CAPTURE and HERO6 Black/ HERO5 Black/ HERO5 Session when using a Pro 3.5mm Mic Adaptor:

Non-Powered Microphones will not work when starting a video using Quick Capture (with the Pro 3.5mm Mic Adaptor). There are two workarounds:
1. Use a powered microphone if the customer needs to use Quick Capture.
2. If the customer is unable to use a powered microphone, simply power the camera on first and then start a recording.

Re: See this from GoPro about External mic for HERO 5 Black, on going saga.

As an added note ever since I updated the software to 2.60, purchased the 3.5 Mic adapter and a powered Mic I've had nothing but problems. Now when using the Quick Capture my H5B freezes up. Never happened before. I have to remove the battery and then it's fine. When using the power button it works fine. Something to do with the Quick Capture or the adapter and the powered Mic. Throught maybe it was the  SD card, but tried a different one and the same thing. Reinstalled 2.60 but no help.

GoPro has offered to replace the camera , but I'm sure it will be a refurbished one.  I'm not a very happy GoPro owner any more. I just want it to work like it's suposed to. Probably the last GoPro for me. I'm not even going to go in to the background static noise I have. Going to look at the Sony model.

revert yout software.

I am  happy  with the Hero 5 black,  I am not happy where gopro  wants to replace or  offer me a trade in yes a hero 6 for my Hero 5. two hundred off that is the 4055  discount.  I will get a newer camera with  THE SAME trobles Lol    there is no perfect gopro out there  that is the truth

Re: See this from GoPro about External mic for HERO 5 Black, on going saga.

The fix for me on my H5B was to disable the Quick Capture.  Since doing that, I've had no further problems.
