Excessive YELLOW on Hero 9

[ New ]

Am I the only one who has noticed that the picture coming out of the Hero 9 has way to many yellows in it?  It's leaning to the warm yellow spectrum way to much.  Do we know if GoPro is going to tweak this in a futrue update?  How would someone fix this?  Even Casey Neistat couldn't hide the yellow lean in his paid promotional video (screenshot below).  There was a lot of yellow in his video to start but the yellow of the Hero 9 tinted the greens even with his exeptional editing skills.  It really did a number on his skin tone too.

I noticed too.
These are unnatural colors.

It has to be the new higher MP sensor doing it. I really hope they can fix it with code. I really dont know if color shift issues like this can be fixed by code or not. Anyone know of an example of a camera being fixed that had a color shift issue?

I also have my doubts.
This is what the shot looks like when the white balance is NATIVE.
Everything is yellow!

Here is another example I just found.  Notice the green pine tree is yellow in the left image.  The left image is the Hero 9.  The right image is a frame capture from a cellphone video.

hi,

two screenshot from one of my videos.....to me the colours are there ...green grass in the left, yellow harvested field in the right, the blue sky, ...on the flag you will find RGB

if it had been a yellow shift, the blue would have been more greenish ...

GoPro colors, WhiteBalance auto, sharp max

just me,

robert

Your pictures look like Hero 8 pictures.  With GoPro color on it turns the sky aquamarine in most cases because of the yellow shift.

Maybe it's a bad batch of cameras?  I see more people complaining about the yellow lean than anything else.  I've actually noticed that all GoPro's have a slight yellow lean in compairison to the compitition.  The 9 just shows it off a whole lot more than previous versions.  Makes us feel like we are in a yellow version of the Matrix.

Hero 9 definitely does lean towards a warmer image.

Coming from a hero 6 the white balance was great and I always just left it on auto.

On the 9 I've taken to having a white balance slider as one of my on screen shortcuts.

I find 5000 good for bright sunny days.

Most other cameras would be set at 5500ish where I live in daytime full sun.

I've also started using flat color profile as Go Pro color just accentuates the issue even further.

Here's a short clip of my Hero 9 filmed with iPhone.

White balance seems natural but as soon as I press record, image turns yellow.

Mine also does this which is strange. I don't have mine with me to test further but does your footage also have the yellow cast or does it match what you saw before pressing record? I don't remember with mine, but perhaps it's only while recording (on the screen) and not in the footage.

Otherwise it's probably a white balance bug which shouldn't be changing/getting worse on shutter press - but for the time being a manual white balance might fix it or at least narrow down possibilities.

Unfortunately it records the yellow tint. What you get is what you see after pressing record button.

Looking at the frame grabs @robert1326 made makes me think there may have been a bad batch of cameras?  I now have another Hero 9 on its way to me.  I am hoping it doen't lean into the yellows as I have seen others do.

@robert1326 are you using a lut or any type of color grading?

@robert1326 is this sign a solid red?  It looks very slighly orange.  Mix red and yellow you get orange.  The only thing that is slightly off on your frame grabs.  This could be my eyes it is late in the evening right now for me lol

@williamc7081

yep, should be solid red.

back in DSLR, days when I post-process heavily a lot of photos, I had Adobe PS.

and was a tool that tells you, per pixel/area, the color composition in RGB.

but postprocessing is time-consuming so I do not use it anymore Adobe.

color GOPRO , WB AUTO - it is a photo, not a frame capture

Screenshot 2020-10-05 120251.png

color FLAT, WB 5500 --- question is ... is not saturated or indeed shifted to yellow.

I'll try to make today some tests... if the job and Giro let me some time.....

Re: Excessive YELLOW on Hero 9

hi all,

just paying around.

I do not want to convince you about the yellow tint.

If you feel so, is there.

is it a yellow tint or only warm colors?

I feel warm colors rather than yellow tint.

https://youtu.be/0YlTV9Bh1qs

https://youtu.be/NEOMn63cVhs

  • kitchen wall and restaurant wall are white in all
  • if yellow shift, the flag blue would be more greenish

I feel gopro 9 warm rather than yellowish in FLAT

GOPRO is more saturated then FLAT

FLAT feels with more color depth than GOPRO, and for sure in post-processing you can play - I do not use post.... just iMovie to make my video clips.

also GoPRO and more natural then iphoneX that is too saturated.

Re: Excessive YELLOW on Hero 9

I can clearly see a difference between the iPhone X photos and the GoPro ones.  The GoPro's are a shade wamer with the yellows (like adding a yellow tint over most everything).  It's not as bad on your GoPro as I have seen on others.  Except that white wall scene.

Re: Excessive YELLOW on Hero 9

Yeah the colors are only off by a little.  I wonder why some are way more than others.  Like Casey's video where you can clearly see the yellow lean.  He is a professional and it had a yellow lean to the colors.
