Does hypersmooth kill GPS?

[ New ]

Many people complain about GPS error.
I tested a lot myself and noticed the following.
If hypersmooth is off, GPS data will be retained.
Watch the video below:
https://youtu.be/Zc62nu1XUsg

If the hypersmooth is turned on, it will, in a good case, record the GPS data for a while and then the data will disappear.
Watch the video below:
https://youtu.be/OuvCTY0zRKo
Everything is fine on the video until 1:11, then no more GPS data.

Based on these, it seems to me that the hypersmooth takes up a lot of resources and does not remain a resource for GPS management.
This is definitely a software problem.

Hero 94K 30FPSBitrate Normalhypersmooth OFFGPS Data okay
Hero 94K 30FPSBitrate Normalhypersmooth ONGPS Data lost after 1:11

could be an excellent observation!!!!!

I have a hard time myself in adding the GPS data.

on my MTB with hypersmooth on, I was never able.

when I use it as dashboad camera in my car, I do not use stabilisation.

still this is one of the only case in the car when I was able to add GPS stickers.

thank you!

Can you send a link to the exif tool?

https://exiftool.org.
But I'm afraid it's a bit more than just install the .exe.
You'll need to read further, e.g. https://exiftool.org/forum/index.php?topic=11189.0
Can you upload your original file somewhere and share the link here?

exiftool rocks!!!!!   thank you!!!!!

is strange.....GPS data are plenty - could be the GoPro mobile app....

I have MTB videos for which I can add GPS data, hypersmooth was on.

- I have a 5min video

- depending on where I start the clip (1min) I might be able or not to add GPS  stickers

11min 6sec duration

641 GPS timestamps (almost each second)

total 12089 GPS Lat/Long/Altitude/Speed/Speed3D readings - so 19 reads/sec

in windows you have only to extract the exe.

rename it at exiftool.exe (from exiftool(-k).exe)

and use it like:

c:\tmp\exiftool>exiftool -ee GX010111.MP4 > all_exif.txt

in the all_exif.txt is everything.

if you follow their forum, you will see example for extracting only GPS data in CSV files, etc......

I also have data in the Exif tool.
According to them, the factory program sometimes cannot read well.
It is simply outrageous that we do the work of GoPro.
Of course, this will not display GPS data yet.
It would be good to know when they will be repaired.

The Exif tool works.
How can I extract .GPX file from a video file?

I might find that not always GPS is accurate:

jumps from 3D reading to 2D and none

Maybe "just" caused by no GPS signal?

Surely not!
I made several videos.
I made this video first.
Hypersmooth off.
All right here.
https://youtu.be/zNY_zla-WZ0

A few minutes later. In the same place, I took the same path.
The only difference is that the hypersmooth is on.
https://youtu.be/OuvCTY0zRKo

Same place, same time, same all.
Exception is the hypersmooth on or off.

hi,

even with stabilization off, no GPS (valid) data.

what I made is compare the GP8 (old files) with GP9.

both as dashboard, in the same place in the car, on the windshield.

both without stabilization.

yes I know...different places, different time.

but GP8 in 13 minutes has ALL GPS measurements all 3D, all good.

GP9 has no single valid GPS measurement - like I'm hovering at 7000m

I'll repeat, stabilization was OFF.

White Balance : AUTO
Sharpness : HIGH
Color Mode : GOPRO
GoPro EXPT : AUTO
Auto ISO Max : 1600
Auto ISO Min : 100
Exposure Compensation : 0.0

Field Of View : Super View
GoPro SROT : 23.377779006958
GoPro ZFOV : 148.271896362305
GoPro VLTE : N
GoPro EISE : N
Electronic Image Stabilization : N/A

all GPS data look like:

GPS Measure Mode : Unknown (0)
GPS Date Time : 2015:10:18 00:00:00.109
GPS Horizontal Positioning Error: 99.99
Units : deg, deg, m, m/s, m/s
Scale Factor : 10000000 10000000 1000 1000 100
GoPro GPSA : MSLV
GPS Latitude : 46 deg 26' 56.88" N
GPS Longitude : 23 deg 26' 0.10" E
GPS Altitude : 7065.072 m
GPS Speed : 0
GPS Speed 3D : 0

I'll do more tests tomorrow.
I enclose exif tool data with the tests.
The annoying thing is that this is not for us users to investigate, but for GoPro support.

In my tests having hypersmooth on or off did not make a big difference. Hero 9 GPS was unusable almost all of the time: https://community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro-Telemetry-GPS-overlays/Hero-9-for-telemetry/gpm-p/724365#M635

Hero 8 was good. GoPro are aware of this and are investigating: https://github.com/gopro/gpmf-parser/issues/112

It seems a hardware problem to me, as some cameras do not appear to show the problem. But I'm just guessing. It would be interesting to see if having the fingers up or down or mounting vs hand-holding the camera makes any difference, just like that seems to affect the unresponsive screen problem.

I cannot do more tests for now, as I returned the Hero9. You can export and visualize the GPS data here: https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/free/

hi,

hero8 was perfect in any way I mount it.

hero9... mounted on the handlebar, car windshield, hold in my hand when walking, chest mounted, backpack mounted - no steady GPS.
