I have the same problem. Try putting on some polarized sunglasses then switch it on. You cant even read the LCD screen.
Without polarized sunglasses no issue. Not sure if the screen is faulty or this is normal with the screen. But previous GoPro didn't have this problem.

So apparently this is normal with the GoPro HERO5 as customer service has just notified me. With all my other GoPro's this has never been an issue, but the HERO5 wearing polarised sunglasses you won't be able to read the front LCD correctly. I can't believe for $500 camera wearing sunglasses this is an issue. I still think the LCD screen is sun damaged or discoloured from manufacture but would be interested if anyone else has this issue. The LCD screen looks discoloured with a rainbow tint.
Just letting you know GoPro - I'm not Happy with this purchase!

Mine is nice and clear. Even with sunglasses. A bit og rainbow at cirtain angles but not prob.
Much better than the 4 as I can actually read it!
Anyway, hardly use the front screen as the back is so good for a quick mode change anyway.
For those returning, go buy a Virb ulta30, great front lcd on that.... :-)

I am just currious when you say this suggests GoPro uses cheap componets in the cameras you are an engineer and you know this is the sign of cheap gear? My Sony camera has this same effect with polarized sunglasses on to.
For the others that said they are returning just on this you certainly missing out on a super fun piece of gear. I would suggest just going out and using it all the little details that you are being picky on I believe you can find on any product if you look hard enough.

No I'm not.. Only saying that as it looks like there is a lot of issues with the hero 5 black. I had to return my first hero 5 has it had a very noisy/crispy image (like super super high iso that I could not adjust). The replaced one is much better but has this discolored LCD that the previous one didn't. I won't return it as it obvisouly doesn't affect the quality of the video but it just gives me overall impression of an unfinished work. Never had any issue with my previous gopros..
