Damaged GPS?

[ New ]

I recently went on a bike ride. After reviewing the video in Quik, I noticed a few problems with the GPS data.

1: The gigantic speed rise and a smaller one as well.

2: The blue route map in the upper left corner has a loop, which didn't happen.

3: The flat, unchanging speed section during the middle of the trip. This is likely a lost connection.

4: When stopped, the camera says that I'm still going at a decent speed.

What could be the problem? The cause? I haven't noticed this problem in the past before. I'm using a chest mount and Lexar 633X 64GB.

Hi @maplepanda

Thank you for sharing the video and I am sorry for any troubles caused.

Here are some things to consider when troubleshooting GPS signal issues

  • Things/places to avoid:
    • Large buildings
    • Trees
    • Big metal objects
    • Anywhere with high electrical interference
    • Severe weather
  • Ideal places for the best GPS signal
    • Wide, open areas
    • No buildings/heavy electronics around
    • Clear sky

Do you have other files with a similar issue? I suggest doing a manual software update as this usually corrects most issues on the camera.

Once the update is completed, please do some test recordings and see if it makes a difference.

If it's still the same please reach out to our Support Team for further assistance. https://gopro.com/help/ContactUs

Best Regards,

Ej

I can upload the rest of the video if you like. Don't think location was an isuue considering I was out in the open. Maybe that speciic area of Vancouver just doesn't have good connection? GPS was working perefectly a week ago at home. I will do ther update and let you know the results. Thanks for the help!

OK, did the manual update successfully and tested GPS again. No more sudden speed rises, but still has the problem with not recognizing me stopping. I compared the GoPro's data to my phone running Strava and noticed that the elevation changes did not match up. The GoPro was still recording an elevation drop even though I had stopped. Overall speeds are more accurate, though. The flat speed at the end must be a lost connection. I'll try again in a car and see if I get different results.

Re: Damaged GPS?

Hey Ej,

Did you make any progress with this? I experienced a similar issue with the GPS speed data while using a chest mount - both on a mountain bike and a dirt bike. Speed seems to record find when mounted on my helmet.

I've chatted with the "support" people on their chat tool and the support has been less than stellar.

My suspicion is that the GPS antenna doesn't get good GPS signal when it is mounted on your chest and you're bent over gripping the handlebars i.e. the signal has to pass through your torso.

watch how the speed changes in the video:
