I can sometimes get it to connect intially if i delete the camera from the app and start over, but it looses connection and then will not connect again until i delete it, if then. i'm using an lg running android 7.0

Which version of GoPro app is installed on your phone? For the application to work smoothly, make sure that you have installed the latest version (v5.0) of it on your phone, that your phone is updated to the latest OS version, and that the camera has the latest firmware. In order to do this, you can:
- Uninstall then re-install GoPro app
- Update your LG phone from Android 7.0 to the latest OS, if applicable
- Manually update your camera firmware following the steps here.

Still having connection issues with the latest app. It still won't let me update the camera because the wifi signal is too low. Camera is right next to the phone. I'll try my wifes phone as well. I even tried downloading the latest firmware and flashing using the sd card and it did nothing when i powered on the camera. I had the files in the root directory, no folder. maybe it has the latest firmware, but i was expecting something.

Create an UPDATE folder on your SD card then transfer the update files inside.
Try to put the SD card back to the camera.
Power the camera on, this should then initiate the update.
Once the update is done, try pairing the camera again.

Did you reset the connection already and then uninstall the app on your phone.
After that delete the Wi-Fi SSID on your phone and then Bluetooth device ID of your GoPro.
That should work already.
