Camera orientation and “horizon” lock. Is it possible with Hero 7 Black?

I wanna shoot some kitesurfing rigging a Hero 7 Black from the kite lines. The kite is constantly rotating the camera. Is there a way to lock the orientation and always have ocean down and sky up despite of the camera tilt (rotation)?

It is the opposite of the manual information on “camera orientation” on page 15...
“The orientation is locked in when you press the Shutter button . If your camera tilts during recording, like on a roller coaster, your footage will tilt with it. You’ll capture every twist and turn.”

I do not want my footage to tilt with it.

I am trying to avoid more weight on my lines by using a single axis stabilizer like the Quark, from Noir Matter: https://noirmatter.com/products/quark-stabilizer

Please let me know if there’s a setting or software that would easily allow me to accomplish that.

Thanks in advance and aloha!

Re: Camera orientation and “horizon” lock. Is it possible with Hero 7 Black?

Simple answer. no. It's not possible. You can lock the orientation to UP, DOWN or Auto. However, in Auto, once you start recording, whatever orientation it starts with is what it continues to have until the recording stops.

Re: Camera orientation and “horizon” lock. Is it possible with Hero 7 Black?

Hi @raimar2000,

I agree with @danielr15. This feature is currently not available on any GoPro cameras. Once you start recording, the orientation is locked. This way, the camera retains its orientation if it (or you) is flipped during recording.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion. I'll pass this information along to the team.

Feel free to post back if you have any further questions. Stay stoked, and have fun capturing moments using your GoPro!
