Camera Unusable (Freeze on boot, buttons non-responsive, not updating)

I have a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition that I bought a few years ago that is completely nonresponsive. Over the years, I've had a couple glitches with it, so my usage of the camera has been limited due to it being unreliable. I haven't been an extreme user (haven't taken it underwater/in the rain/motorcycling, etc) and there is no visable damage - most applications have been in-doors with some outdoor use. 

I am preparing for an overseas vacation this summer and would love to have my GoPro up and running but NOTHING I try is working.

 

Here is what I have tried so far:

I have tried manuel firmware updates... the camera skips updating and goes directly a read-out screen...

I have tried manipulating setting with the phone app... can see the camera via WiFi... app tells me that the camera is unresponsive...

I have tried holding down the power button and shutter button for 10 seconds... the camera ignores my command...

I have tried operating the camera with no SD card... no response...

I have tried the desktop softwares... Quik sees the camera and that it could use a firmware update, but refuses to update it... claiming errors of some sort...

I have tried a young priest, an old priest, and an exorcism ritual... ok, maybe I haven't gone that far, but I feel like I've tried everything else...

Am I just the proud owner of a fancy brick or is there help somewhere out there?

Good luck. If that doesn't work you'll probably need to contact the GoPro Support Team.

The steps I recommend you try are this:
1) Completely charge the battery
2) Take the SD card and battery out of the camera
3) Format the card in your computer (leave the label [name] blank) and use FAT format
4) Put only the battery back into the camera
5) While holding down the shutter button power on the camera
6) Once the camera is fully powered on, release the shutter button and then power off
7) Download the manual update to your computer
8) Extract and then copy the Update (not Update.zip) folder onto the blank SD card
9) Insert the SD card and power on the camera
If the update goes through, and you get function of the buttons, take two pictures and then two short videos
10) Connect the camera to your computer, start the GoPro Quik app, and then press the power button on the camera (Quik will check and set your camera settings)

If this doesn't work, repeat the above steps with a different card. Also, if you have a different battery it would be god to try that as well.

What SD card are you using? If the manual update isn't working then you should try a different card from this list https://gopro.com/help/articles/Block/microSD-Card-Considerations

Daniel - Thank you for responding. I am using a SanDisk Extreme UHC-1 32 GB card.

 

I guess what stumps me the most is that once the camera is powered on, none of the buttons function whatsoever. For example, I have no problem powering on the camera, but once it's on, the button ceases to function and it becomes completely nonresponsive to all forms of app. Same goes for the WiFi...  

 

If I can get my hands on another card to try, I'll see if that changes things...
