If you can access a computer (perhaps hotel business center) you should try a manual update of the camera. If you have a spare SD card and USB?SD card adapter it will work best. Download and extract the UPDATE folder to the computer. Format the SD card (full not quick) in the computer (this will erase all data so back it up, use a new/blank card, or skip this step if need be). Place the UPDATE folder on the root of the SD card (not inside any folders) and then eject the card. Place the card in your camera and run the update.
Once the update has been completed check to see if the issue is resolved. If not, or if you are unable to do a manual update, pull the battery and SD card out of the camera. Hold down the side mode/power button for a full minute to drain any residual power. Hold down the top shutter button and only insert the battery. Keep holding down the shutter and press the mode/power button. Once the camera powers up, release the shutter. Repeat a couple times if the LCD doesn't start up correctly.
If you still can't get it working right after trying the above, then you will need to use the front LCD for your settings until you return from your trip. You will want to contact the GoPro Support Team for further assistance https://gopro.com/help/ContactUs

Thanks for the help. It was a total bummer that a brand new camera that I only used for about a week before this trip couldn't take a second trip. The camera was less than 4 months old. I used it on this second trip, but being a newbie, struggled with it every day on an expensive vacation to Maui. Needless to say I was more than bummed. I didn't even use it on some days because it was such a hassle. Anyway, enough of my whining. I called tech support when I got home only to find out the camera is defective. So we started a return with an RMA, I boxed it and shipped it back yesterday. My only fear now is I'm going to get a refurbished camera, when I paid for a new one, but I guess I'll have to wait and see what I get. They only wanted the camera, not the housing, cable or battery. Which tells me it won't come to me in a brand new box, ergo refurbished. I thought I was buying the best when I bought a GoPro at $400 bucks, and I wouldn't have any problems. I guess I was wrong. I could have bought a cheap Chinese camera for a hell of a lot less and would have probably been happier. Anyway, let's wait and see what I get back, new or a refurb. Just gotta say my faith in GoPro right now isn't real high at this point.

Hi, I've tried everything, but it didn't help me to resolve issue with black screen. Looks like touch screen respondes to touches, I could turn on Wi-Fi and changed some settings, but can't undestand how to fix black screen ((
Does anyone know how to fix?

The most common reason for the blank screen is when a SD card gets put in the gap between the SD card slot and battery. If it's possible that this is what happened, then there isn't much you can do as this disconnects the ribbon connector.
