Battery and USB Compartment Door VERY Hard to Open

[ Edited ]

I purchased a second GoPro 7 Black for my wife, and I'm having the hardest time trying to get these two compartment doors open. On mine, the USB door is a pain to open, just like my wife's, but my battery comapartment door is so smooth and easy. No effort at all. I can't recall it being hard to open from the start when I purchased it. Now on my wife's cam, the battery compartment door is exprememly hard to open. It can open, but you have to apply a lot of downward pressure. Will this free up over time, or is it going to continue to be like this.

In order for me to open it, I press down hard with my thumb and slide the door. It requires quite a bit of force. I've tried pushing down on the locking pin with one hand and trying to pry it open with my fingernail on the other hand. The only thing I was successful in doing was breaking my finger nail. Why one cam is so easy, and the other requires the force of Arnold Swarzenagger? I have other underwater cameras and all of the their water tight compartment doors open very smoothly, but GoPro . . . wait a pain. As I asked, will this free up in time? Any solutions as to loosen it some without destroying it's water tight entegrity?

Cheers

Re: Battery and USB Compartment Door VERY Hard to Open

Try swapping the battery between your camera and your wife's camera.  It could be the battery may be slightly bulged or damaged, this can cause the battery compartment door to be hard to close.  Also make sure the ribbon for removing the battery is still flat and not scrunched up, as this may also cause slight jamming.

Re: Battery and USB Compartment Door VERY Hard to Open

Thanks for replying. Yes, I did try all that you suggested. I have three batteries from my GoPro that I tried, and there is no difference. Ribbons on each battery were flat. Funny thing is, even with no battery inserted, the compartment door is tough to open. I'm hoping that in time and with continued use, this might loosed up. I can understand the need for it to be somewhat tight to provide a seal, but not to the point where you have to exert so puch pressure/force to open it. Doesn't make sense, considering my GoPro battery compartment door opens with ease.

Right now, I'm looking at the Osmo Action. I like the way the battery is removed. Just a couple of small switches on either end and it's open. You don't have to break fingernails and create caluses on the bottom portion of your thumb to remove it, and what's nice, each battery has it's own water tight seal. That's a winner.

Re: Battery and USB Compartment Door VERY Hard to Open

I posted this solution for someone else who was having a hard time opening the charging port door:

Remember, this is supposed to be a water proof hatch and it needs to be fully secured to prevent water intrusion.  The reason it's harder to open than the battery hatch is because the battery hatch button is longer and elongated and more suited to your hand.

I don't have a GP7 here with me, but I do have a GP Fusion with me and I tried opening the charging hatch (very similar design) the same way you were doing it in the video and viola, I also had issues.

Then you press your thumb on the hatch button, due to the size of your thumb (and mine) the button is not being depressed enough, also there is pressure being put on the hatch itself around the button.  This means you're pressing on the rubber gasket too much and therefore making the hatch harder to open.  So it's like by trying to open the hatch, you are making the hatch stick more and therefore harder to open.

My two solutions are this.

1:  Instead of using the flat of your thumb, rotate your thumb onto it side and then slightly elevate your wrist.  This way you are using one corner of your thumb to open the hatch.  This should result in you being able to depress the button while putting less pressure on the rest of the hatch.  You can then push forward and release the hatch.   Mind you, this is only slightly easier and you'll still need to put some effort into it.

2:  A method which I found to be easier was to use a pencil with an eraser on the top of it.  Hold the pencil as per normal while placing the eraser on the thumb button.  Press inwards and slide the hatch open.  I found the eraser fit into the hatch button slot easily and provided enough grip to slide the hatch upwards and open.

Re: Battery and USB Compartment Door VERY Hard to Open

Thanks again for your reply. For quite sometime this morning, I have been opening and closing the battery door over and over and over. It seems to be freeing up a little. I'm beginning to wonder that perhaps the door on my cam might be a little too loose. It seems to close fine, but it is so easy to open. As long as I can start to open my wife's cam a little easier, it should be fine. It's not like one has to keep opening and closing it all the time. I'll try that pencil eraser trick, but I think the only pencils I have are a number of mechanical pencils from my days of drafting. Yep, before computers took over. I actually miss my drafting days. Heck of a lot of fun.
