Thanks for reaching out. GoPro cameras have a fixed focus lens. As far as I know, everything that's one foot away from the camera will be in focus.
Anyhow, your feedback is very much appreciated. These are great inputs as far as lens focus in the camera and mic adapter. I'll have the information shared to the team in charge.
Feel free to post back if anything else comes up. Stay stoked, and have fun capturing moments using your GoPro!

GoPro will be releasing new cameras in Sept/Oct of this year, so perhaps they will provide one that better suits your needs.
If not, you might want to consider getting a camera that is more appropriate than an action camera for animal photography. Panasonic and Cannon both have very affordable interchangeable-lens cameras with multi focus point detection. Personally, I prefer Panasonic Lumix cameras for their stabilization (once you use a camera like the GoPro HERO7 Black you just can't go back to unstabilized cameras), but Cannon cameras have better Auto Focus. Even the Nikon D3200 with the VR II kit lens is more appropriate and very affordable than an action camera for widelife photography. Sony also makes very good cameras, but they tend to be more expensive.
If you are into photography, you should first start by looking at cameras that specialize in photography. GoPro cameras take amazing photos in RAW, HDR, Tonal Mapping, noise Reduction, Scene Detection, but are action cameras first and foremost. And for capturing video of action, there is no better camera than the HERO7 Black.
