Just at the end of a 6 week motorbike ride on the East Coast of Australia. My husband and I have our own bikes andI have my camera mounted on my handlebars to record the journey. To GoPro's credit the video footage with the H5B is fantastic. Typically over here in Australia we have been riding under blue skies which look great. And even though I'm riding a Harley Davidson, the stabilisation is amazing. Shame though, the audio has been a real problem.
I film with an external mic-and use either a dual mic or single. The dual mic picks up me and the exhaust sound of the bike-which sounds really good. We have had two main audio issues.
Firstly, early on this trip a crackling sound that's unbearable to listen to. We got this only with the dual mic and found that by wrapping the mic adaptor in tin foil it effectively shields it from the electrical intererence of the engine. We also had the cable shielded. This problem went away, but GoPro, maybe you should be shielding your mic adaptor to eliminate this issue...
Secondly, we had recordings with no sound at all-this was an intermittent issue-typically half the footage in a day of recording will have no audio at all.
Over 50% of the hours of footage I have shot on my bike has had sub standard audio. Intermittently having no sound at all was a real brain teaser. We tried all sorts of solutions-using different memory cards, different batteries, tried a different mic adaptor, got the mics checked, tried all the camera setting combinations-just couldn't pin it down.
Logged a call with GoPro and as a result did a firmware upgrade-no change.
Out of terrible frustration we asked GoPro to replace the camera. This is where I get really mad. GoPro, when you are on the road in another country, you can't take the camera back to where you bought it-and you can't provide a forwarding address and then wait a7 working days for a replacement-you guys must know that this is NOT workable.
In the end we had a promise from our retailer in New Zealand and on that basis we bought another Hero5Black here in Australia. Guess what-it failed too!
GoPro, you guys must know you have an audio problem with this camera-we eliminated every accessory possibilty-it's the camera.
At the end of our trip we have finally been able to reproduce the condition that makes the sound fail. We told you we had found how to reproduce the issue but you never asked us how-you just closed the call-do you even care?
Right now I'm a bit over GoPro. We have spent so much time and money trying to figure the audio issues out with little support, empathy or care from GoPro-I'm a big GoPro user-I've captured over 6TB of data since I got the camera in March 2017. Now I'm seriously considering changing to Sony.
I just can't believe you didn't help us out more, wouldn't help us replace the camera, and haven't asked us how to reproduce the 'no sound' audio fault.
