Apple watch app disappeared

[ New ]

I have an iphone 8plus, apple watch series 3 and gopro hero 5 black, after setting up the watch I was amazed to see that there is a gopro app for the watch and that preview and control worked! However just now when I was about to use it I couldn't find the icon for the app anywhere. I checked the phone and it said that the gopro app for the watch is installed, I tried to remove and would try to reinstall, but then it is no longer available on the apps to be installed.

Reinstall the gopro app on the phone as well and re-paired the gopro again, still to no avail! Anyone got any suggestions, I've already restarted both the phone and watch, and made sure I was connected to the gopro as well.

Well that explains it, are there plans to bring it back, what was the reason for removing it?

I am also very interested in this. I purchased a GoPro last week with the hope of being able to control it via my Apple Watch. The day after I purchased the GoPro, the Apple Watch app dissapeared. Any chance this will be coming back?

Hi @drillz77,

Not sure if it will still be available or will come back.

We don't have the reason yet as to why is it removed.

But I just want to set your expectations most likely it will no longer come back.

This is exactly why I would never ever purchase another product from this company, they had that bug with the time display and never bothered to fix it before releasing the 7.

It is still nowhere to find. So annoying. I chatted to gopro online to solve the problem. But the real problem was that a persone(specialist) who I chatted, did not recognize what the problem was. Wish this problem is solved as fast as possible. (By the way, any go pro people monitors this comuunity page?)

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

I had exactly the same problem. I chatted with the GoPro support staff, and they had no idea about my problem or what I was trying to do. I kept trying to explain but they just kept saying that I need to download the app to my iPhone. Then they ended up saying I need to contact Apple because it is their problem.

Would be great to get an answer on this. As I said, the only reason I went with GoPro was because I thought I could control it via my Apple watch (which they advertise). If they dont bring it back, I will be changing to another device.

I have the same issue, changed from iPhone 7 to Xs and now the app is gone (on the watch), the description on the app store still says that there is apple watch compatibility, but it clearly doesn't work. I feel angry that I spend an hour and a half trying to fix it.

This company really sucks, spends so much on promotional materials instead of actually improving their software and products. I'm looking forward to getting the OSMO Pocket this year.

Piss poor marketing on your all’s part. I used this all the time the reason I bought a go pro to begin with and for you all to just take it away it’s messed up you should almost have to give some sort of refund or fix the problem and get it back on the watch. Otherwise this looks like the only reason you all took it away was to line your pockets more to sell more of your **bleep** go pro remotes which don’t work that great anyway. Very angry customer will never buy one of your products again shady business dealings. Really hope you all fix your greed issue or programming issue and bring it back. You all are a joke and don’t give two **bleep**s about your customers. It was even hard to find info on why it wouldn’t work very very shady GOPRO I’ll def be sure to bash you all to anyone thinking about getting one as well as online Facebook and to anyone that wants to listen. Or you all could just not be Total pos and bring it back

Loved using my Apple Watch to record, especially while skiing. Just arrived on the slopes to begin recording & saw it was missing from my watch. Did a quick google search to see what happened & saw this thread. Well besides this disappointment of not being able to use it for this trip, I had planned on upgrading my older Hero 4 to a newer 7 with some holiday money I had. No longer thinking I will as who knows what other functions you will decide take away in the future.

JFYI, "Hero 7 Black Shutter" app works for me well. So it could be an alternative till the manufacturer resolves all related issues.
P.S. my configuration is GoPro Hero7 Black + iPhone X + iWatch 3 Series

This is dumb, why did you just remove the app?  You guys have officially downgraded a product.  This is almost planned obsolescenses, to promote you brand with apple watch support gainig popularity.  Then after you have captured the market remove a software based fetaure from the purchase.  cmon gopro remeber how badass you guys were

Why would GoPro stop supporting the Apple Watch App.  It is a perfect additon to the camera control, especially on the track.

The previous repsonce that it is no longer supported was weak!  Please bring the app back or expalin the reason for not.

Thank you

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

I tried to solve that problem with GoPro support couple of weeks ago and they just asked me to re-install the app, re-connect the camera etc. etc. they even didn't know that THEIR app for Apple watch doesn't exist anymore. I wasted over 1 hour on chat without getting any solution.

Apple Watch app was one of the main reasons I bought GoPro Black 7. Cannot believe taht company as big as GoPro cannot put their sh*t together and make simple app for smartwatch. At least explain why it is so hard for you guys. From my point of view it's bit disrespectful.

You can add another disappointed customer to your list.. (probably you don't care about that anyway). I've been using GoPro cameras since number 3 but it looks like number 7 will be the last one.

Thanks

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

GoPro had been downsizing to return to profitability. Most likely they looked at the number of people using the Apple watch app, considered the cost of continuing to develope and support it, and determined that it was too costly. I don't know why this makes you feel "disrespected" but it's not an affront directed at you.

This might come as a big surprise, but GoPro is a company. Not only that, they are publicly traded. There responsibility is to serve the share holders as well as their customers. Since GoPro has not made a profit in the last several years, they are required to make cuts to non essential departments. With less than one thousand employees world wide, they aren't that big to begin with.

GoPro knows exactly how many people have downloaded and are using the watch app. They wouldn't have discontinued it if it was a widely used app. However, with that being said, I'm sure that if they can return to profitability, there is a very good chance that the resources will be made available to continue the app again.

GoPro actually returned to profitability with a 4.7% rev increase in August of 2018. So this statement is wrong.

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

[ New ]

? the stock was Just shy of $87 a share at the end of 2014... it is now $4.91..... And april 2018 is almost a year ago.. Not sure where you are going with this...

But they had an App, it was Quirky- Instead of Fixing the App ( i am certain that is much easier said than done)- it has been pulled.

Also the remo has been pulled- due to the batteries failing (they do work like champions when they are in good working order)

Which Leaves the Wifi remote-Which seems to work best with a hero 4 as opposed to the 7

If they have an app that will act as a remote, which has been removed, but sell a product that is a remote....

maybe the right answer was charging $5 for the app to support th R&D....

I would pay $ 5.00 for the Watch App.  I currently use two cameras for my Track Car.  A Hero Sessions and

and a hero 6 black.  I find both of the camera's hard to opperate ( especially the Hero Sessions).  I do have a

remote.  The watch would have been perfect to control the 6 ( while using the remote for the Session).  I can not access my phone while being strapped in my harness, but I could utilize the remote and the watch.

My Smart Remote and the original GoPro remote work fine with all of my GoPro cameras, including HERO5/6/7 and Fusion.

@quickdusk8252 GoPro reported a Net loss of 37 million in August of 2018. Revenue for Q2 2018 was $283 million, down 5% year-over-year and up 40% quarter-over-quarter.

$5 $10 $100
How many downloads and at what price will pay for hiring quality engineers, pay their salary, pay their health benefits, pay their 401K, pay for working space, pay for free food, which GoPro provides it's employees, pay vacations, and pay to keep them from going to another software company?

The fact is I don’t want to walk around with two devices strapped to my wrist when they sold these cameras with advertising stating it would work with Apple Watch then out of no where they just pull support to the point there customer service reps don’t even know what’s going on. They were still advertising on there site right before the holiday stating it would work with Apple Watch and in fact it would not they had not even updated there website.

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

And you are underestimating it. Somewhere in the middle lies the truth. However, the idea that GoPro discontinued the Apple watch app "just because" is least likely. Again, this is a small company that is trying to return to profitability. Cuts had to be made. Resources had to be allocated to departments that were deemed most profitable and products that had the least amount of use were cut. They wouldn't just stop the app if supoorting it it was as simple as you want to believe. There is more to it, but you just don't want to acknowledge it.

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

Nobody said they did it for nothing, it was very much profit based. I’m not going to argue the business philosophy of GoPro because as much as you’d try to believe it neither of us actually know. So let’s talk about facts, any time a company offers specific features that are then discontinued because the company can not afford to support it their will be push back from said audience that spent money expectaing that feature support. Imagine buying a car and the remote unlock being discontinued becusse the auto maker could not afford to update it based on new security risks. Now we can argue the vitality this might have as in inconvience to ones life. To act like they have no right to be upset is ignorant and unfair, it’s a classic example of over promise under delivet. For you to expect the consumer to be sympathetic to their bad business practice just shows you need to take a good look at the CEO of gopros net worth.

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

It's not like this or that, there are no needs for analogies as it is what it is. A free app was discontinued. Comparing it to a car and the remote is silly.

This is an open community forum. If you want to express your feeling too GoPro, use the feedback form. https://gopro.com/feedback

Otherwise, you can make false statements like you did about profitability and silly analogies all day, but it's not changing anything. It's certainly not changing my mind or opinion.

They have remained profitable since August of 2018, look it up. I also clarified that the analogy did not have the same effects on ones life, so it was just that an analogy. Me saying that you are being ignorant and unfair for thinking people should be sympathetic for GoPro is very much an open forum topic. If you don’t like the conversation then you can not converse here. I wouldn’t if I was defending what you’re defending. Do you need sources for GoPros financial statment...it’s pretty easy with google kinda a big deal when they regained profitability but seems like you might of had out dated information. You obviously has no use for the remote app, why are you even in this discussion your opinion is pointless considering this had no impact on your life?

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

[ New ]

i think this went way off topic for a discussion about a watch app.

(i'm guilty of it)

Apparently a lot of us Very much liked the convience of the watch application

The Watch is a one stop wearable for control (the watch is NOT a gopro product.... so i can understand why this may not be as easy as "Just Fix it"

Bottom line- I think the demand to have the app come back into play is high.

Yes there are other solutions- but the watch app was highly accepted.

as a side note- I love my Gopro cameras, honestly i do... have i had issues with them?- absolutely

But in truth they handle tech support VERY WELL- EVERYTIME

They really went out of their way to make sure i was satified with the end result....

So with a speed bump here and there, its ok. As a whole i am HAPPY with their Product.

“We expect to achieve profitability in Q4 and for the second-half of 2018, and exit the year with low channel inventory to be well positioned for Q1 2019." This was from the CEO, and if you actually read the finanacial statement and look where they have cut costs...anything after August 2018 (when they released the Hero 7) so in Q-4 of 2018 aka September (after August like my original claim was) they will once the numbers come out have regained profitability....like I said read the actual financial statement yes Q4 numbers are not technically out but it is very easy to see with the cuts they have made and revenue they have made that yes all of Q4 2018 was in fact. Did you even read that?

Re: Apple watch app disappeared

@quickdusk8252
First, the fact that you keep focusing on winning the argument as to whether or not GoPro is profitable just affirms that you agree, if they are not, it justifies cutting the Apple watch app. If not, why do you keep arguing this point?

Second, GoPro has been saying in every quarterly report that they expect to return to profitability in 20XX. With the HERO7 Black's success, I won't be surprised if they finally do. But, even if that is the case, as a company you don't just say, "Well, we did it! Now let's burn through all this new cash re-hiring all the people we fired and start doing the things that were losing is money!" 😂🤣

To sum up. GoPro had an app for the Apple watch. GoPro made cuts to the company in an effort to return to profitability. It appears that the app was cut during this time. GoPro is not currently developing the app.

Seconded!
Im boggled that it doesnt have an app.

I snowboard and wakeboard, I don't need to be taking off my gloves and digging through my coat in sub zero temps to find my phone or trying to bring my phone out on the lake and finding room ffor it in bikini hoping i dont drop it in the water when im wearing a perfectly capable and accessable accessory on my wrist.

How is this not an option considering that so many people use these cameras for activities where they wouldn't want to have to get their phone?
Come on gopro!

^ I would highly suggest checking out a hero4 (silver or black) with the Battery Bacpac.

I have a plethora of Gopros- That is the only combo i can get lengthy footage with-

30-35 degees farenheit- almost 3 hours of footage- 1080p@60 linear and wide

20-30 degees farenheit- 2 to 2.5 hours of footage- 1080p@60 linear and wide

10-20 degees farenheit- 1.5 to 2 hours of footage- 1080p@60 linear and wide

0-10 degees farenheit- 30 to 45 minutes of footage- 1080p@60 linear and wide

Hope this helps(Hero7 is just about usless after 10-15 minutes)

It's crucial to have the app on the watch when you are out and about and can't fiddle with the camera.
