A lot of grain on red color GoPro Hero 7

I have my GoPro Hero 7 settings on:

4k 50fps, WB 5000K, Color - Flat, ISO 100- 400, Shutter 1/100, SD card "Samsung EVO Plus 128GB"

I shot in a mall where there are lots of lights in day time, red color in the video shows grain issues, other color in the shot is acceptable. I don't know what is wrong. The GoPro firmware is up to date. Look at the attached JPEG.

Help please.

Re: A lot of grain on red color GoPro Hero 7

Hi @albertkoon54177,

Thanks for reaching out. As far as I know ISO 400 will give a moderate image noise, and 5500K WB will provide a bit warmer color tone, great for use in slightly cool light (e.g. cool fluorescent, average daylight). In order to help us further isolate the issue, I want to check with you a couple of things:

  • Do you notice the image noise when using certain settings only?
  • Do you get the same level of image noise if you set the WB to Auto? With Shutter set to Auto? How about when Protune is turned off?
  • Does changing the video resolution and FPS makes any difference?
  • Does the issue only happens on videos (i.e. photos, timelapse video/photo)?

Any problem related to image quality can be resolved by manually reinstalling the firmware update of the camera. Doing so can help correct any errors with the current software installation. Follow the manual update instructions specified in this article: Software Update Instructions for HERO7 Cameras

You may also upload a sample raw / unedited footage to your Dropbox or Google drive and provide us the shared link so we can look further into the details here.

Looking forward to hear back from you.

Kind Regards,

Re: A lot of grain on red color GoPro Hero 7

Hi Ann,

I haven't try other settings as you mentioned, but the attachment was RAW without color grading and the Camera software was updated with newest firmware. I changed my GoPro with another one in the store and there is no problem with the Red color under the same setting.

I guess it's the camera problem.

Re: A lot of grain on red color GoPro Hero 7

@albertkoon54177, thank you for the update. Given that the firmware update reinstallation didn't help resolve the image quality issue, I reckon the problem is related to the camera's hardware. I'm glad that you were able to exchange your camera at the retailer store.

Feel free to post back if anything else comes up. Stay stoked, and have fun capturing moments using your GoPro!
