This is correct. However, there is no way to force the LIVE output to be 720P 59.94, which is what we need for our application.
When I tried hitting the record button while my HDMI was connected to it, the signal did switch to 720 but the signal was unusable gunk. Once I stopped recording the signal went back to 1080. Even if the signal was usable, it's not feasible to have the camera recording throughout a complete game in order to force 720.

I have the same issue and have a support case around this against the GoPro support.
Also, anyone more than me that have issues with that 1080p50 live output comes out as 1080p50, but every frame in the output is repeated so it's actually 1080p25 that comes out? Makes live video very stuttery!

Oh man, thank you for posting this.
I have also gone down the road of a ticket with support and got no help, so please post your results.
I also have the same strobing issue when using 1080/60 where it comes out 1080/30. If they could at least achieve a true 1080/60 output we could framsync to 720... but as it stands right now the output is useless.
It's frustrating because we made a big investment in these cameras, and the picture the cameras make is spectacular. Please get on this GoPro!
